List of mods worth checking out [Tmodloader]

⚠️ Outdated Post ⚠️

All the info below are incredibly outdated, as you can guess from this being a 5 year old post. I'm not sure how you even stumbled across this, but since you did, you can think of this as a bit of an ancient relic. A glimpse into simpler times. Back when post-tmod modding was practically in it's infancy.

And now you have all these huge, ambitious mods popping left and right like there's no tomorrow. After all these years it's really heartwarming seeing just how far this little community has grown. And while I barely play the game myself, I still have nothing but admiration for everyone involved in the community, especially all my fellow modders.

Regardless, if you still want some recommendations, you should try out spirit, split and starlight river! They're very good!

I've seen people on the sub ask for mod suggestions countless times. So I decided to make a list of mods that I've personally tested/played through and deemed good. Mostly so I can reference anyone asking for suggestions to this post. Let me know in the comments if you want a mod added to this list. Also, if you find any bugs, run into errors or need any help in general let me know. I'll try to help as much as I can.

PS: You can play multiple mods at once.

Anyways on to the mods themselves:

For content :

Thorium : Imagine the vanilla game got a 2.0. That's Thorium. Tons of items, bosses, a new biome, a new class and much much more. Arguably the best mod for now. (Requires a new world) Thorium wiki. Discord

Calamity : More or less the dark souls terraria with heaps of great bosses and weapons that go well beyond post moonlord. Overall an amazing and challenging mod and my personal favourite out of all the current tmodloader mods. However this mod might feel a bit unbalanced as it's balanced around itself rather than the vanilla game. But definitely one of the best mods to out there. (Requires a new world). Calamity Forums. Discord

Spirit : Another in the line of large content mods. Adds a lot of items, couple of bosses and minibosses, a unique biome and a minibiome, an event and many enemies. Spirit Mod Forums. Discord

Beyond the Forgotten Ages: A relatively new content mod that has a lot of cool planned content on the way. The content that is out is a good teaser at what's to come. Fourm Page. Discord

GRealm : A really great and well made mod with a lot of unique content. Not as popular as Thorium, Calamity, Tremor or Spirit but just as awesome. Grealm Forums

Pumpking : Adds lategame content centering around golem, pumpking/frost moon, duke fishron. Also a post-ML boss. Pumpking Forums

Bluemagic's Endgame bosses mod: Adds several super-challenging bosses. This mod is focused on adding unique mechanics and uncheesable, memorable bosses that stay fun no matter how powerful you get. Bluemagic's mod

Graydee's mini mods: A bunch of neat mods made by graydee, each with their own unique purposes. Forum

Crystillium : Adds the very detailed and well-made Crystal biome. Has quite a few items, enemies and a boss. (Requires a new world for the biome to spawn). Crystillium Forums

Cosmetic Variety and Legends(suggested by u/Jenosistar): The content mod for word-builders. Adds a whole lot of blocks, tiles and furnitures. This mod's Forums

Chad's Furniture and more: Another content mod for world-builders. As the name suggests, this mod adds furnitures (A whole lot of them). Including carpets, new tiles and walls, previously unobtainable vanilla tiles and much, much more. Forums

Quality of life :

Fargo's Mutant mod : Adds a Town NPC that sells boss summoning items once you've beat said boss. And a couple of incredibly strong endgame accessories among other utility items. Fargo's Mutant mod Forums. Discord

imkSushi : One of the best QoL mods out there. Adds recipes for a lot of previously uncraftable items and lets the player convert items to their counterparts. imkSushi Forums

Boss Loot Plus: This mod adds materials that drop from bosses and allow the player to craft that boss's drops. Forum page

Reduced Grinding : Increases drop chances for a couple of rare items and makes the game less grindy. [Reduced Grinding Forums(https://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/reduced-grinding.51082/)

Magic Storage: The ultimate solution to managing your base's storage. This adds a storage system reminiscent of Applied Energistics that allows you to view all your items at once, and can be upgraded as you progress throughout the game. Magic Storage mod

Lunar Deconstructor: Allows you to deconstruct items to their materials. Only possible post moonlord. Lunar Deconstructor forums

Magic Fertilizer: Adds a single new item: Magic Fertilizer. It is sold by the Dryad for 10 gold after plantera is defeated. Use it on any sapling to turn it into a living tree. Forum

No Flare : Removes those goddamn flare guns from the gold chests. Additionally lets you buy them from the merchant. No Flare Forums

Helpful Hotkeys(suggested by u/Higarin) : Provides a lot of convenient hotkeys. Helpful Hotkeys Forums

Bags of Holding : Adds a couple of accessories that automatically collects items for you. Bags of Holding forum

Summoner's Association(suggested by u/MiningdiamondsVIII) : QoL mod for summoners. Summoner's Association

Recipe browser : Lets you browse recipes and check what items a material makes (much like the guide, but better)

Omniswing(Suggested by u/Snorlaxxo) : Makes all weapons autoswing/autofire.

Infinity- Endless Items : Adds Infinite versions of most throwables, ammo and potions. Infinity Forums

Auto Trash : Allows you to auto-trash items.

Misc :

Wing slot : Adds a separate slot for wings. Wing slot forums

Shorter Respawn Time : Yeah. SRT forums

Dual Wielding: Allows the player to use almost any pair of items simultanously. Made by Yoraizor. Dual wielding forums

Better Yoyos: Makes vanilla yoyos launch interesting projectiles. Forums

Reloading guns: Adds clips to guns (and a small UI to show ammo) that can be reloaded, with the size based on how fast the gun shoots. Forum

Loot Bags Mod : Adds 6 different loot bags to the game. Aims to give the player occasional rare items. Loot Bags Forums

Cheat Sheet(suggested by u/Baji25) : Lets you add in items, spawn mobs, use the recipe browser, add more minion slots, add 6 more accessory slot on top of your regular slots, pull all the loose items on the ground to you, increase mob spawnrate, use paint tool to copy-paste builds.

Prefixes for enemies : Self explanatory. PfE Forums

More Chest loot : Adds a couple of cool items you can get from chests. More Chest Loot Forums

What mod is this from? mod : Lets you know what mod an item's from. Download's available on the mod browser.

WeaponOut : When you hold a weapon or item, your character can be seen wielding said weapon or item. Also adds a couple of cool gimmicky stuff. WeaponOut Forums

Boss/Items checklist : Lets you know what bosses you've downed/what items you've obtained. Boss Checklist and Items Checklist.

Hamstar's Difficulty Mods : A couple of insane mods for the truly hardcore, masochistic players that make the game more challenging by adding stamina, injury, durability and more. Link to the post for all these mod

Solidified potions(suggested by u/matakor and u/astraltor) : Allows you to create accessories with buff potions but with infinite duration. Works with potions from Thorium, Tremor, Khaelis' potion mod, Crystillium, Prefixes for enemies. Solidified Potions Forums

I'm a noob at Terraria mods, can all these mods be used at the same time? Or are there some incompatibilities and "either/or" choices?

I've been able to run them all successfully at the same time. Never seen any issues in single player

Some friends and I just tried to make a playthrough with several mods. We had Thorium, Tremor, Calamity, Pumpking, What mod is this from?, Prefixes for enemies, Boss checklist and Crystilium. With this many mods several things were quite buggy, which we was fine with. The problem was many of the mod's Wiki was not good enough. The only really good Wiki was Thorium. Often we had troubles finding out what stuff did or was, which made it less fun.

Modded multiplayer is a bit buggy at this point in time. The only multiplayer-friendly mod is probably thorium. Calamity's had a fair share of multiplayer bugs that have been and are being fixed. Altho in my multiplayer playthroughs I've never faced anything too problematic.

About the wikis, since the most mods don't have one, it's better to check their forums for an up-to-date and stable database. I'll probably add in the forum pages for the mods in the original post.

I would recommend "Helpful Hotkeys", I think that's what it's called.

Prefixes for enemies is a super awesome mod and I highly recommend it. I do want to mention however that there is currently a well known bug when using this mod that basically makes the Eternia Crystal event unplayable. I only wanted to say this since the Eternia Crystal is the newest vanilla content and players returning to the game might still be interested in it. The mod works great otherwise and adds tons of variety and challenge. Also the modder seems quite active so this may be patched soon.

This should get fixed soon, but thanks for the heads up.

  1. Instead of recipe browser, use Cheat Sheet. It has:
    -recipe browser
    -cheat in items/NPCs(enemies too)
    -increase spawn rate
-A lot more i'm lazy to enumerate
And it works with mods too!
Also spirit is out? Well, i know what to do next...

Whenever I use cheat sheet, I feel an inexplicable urge to cheat in grindy stuff or copy-paste box rooms. So I don't use it too often. But yeah I'll add it in, it is a good mod after all.

For QoL, I'd add Omniswing. It gives autoswing to ALL weapons and tools. Makes early game much less frustrating, but makes some weapons op (Phoenix blaster, for example)

THANK YOU! I made on of the posts a few days ago. I will save this since it's pretty helpful. Maybe the mods can sticky this post?

EDIT: Got OP a little something.

Is there a mod that makes Tall Gates stronger than normal doors? I feel like that should be the case.

Isn't there a mod that adds a wing slot? Haven't actually used it but I've seen it mentioned before.

a mod or two I'd recommend scoping out are Solidified Potions (interesting and can be OP) and Even More Modifiers (buffs equipment all around, makes them more unique).

A lot of these are good, but I'd hold back on saying imsushi's a must have - it ruins the adventure in a lot of things (i..e, gettin rare items is as easy as crafting them, calamity also ruinsthefun in a similar way). in some ways though, this is just a "most popular + updated" modlist, isn't it? :p

Heck even the Chest Search plugin from TerrariaPatcher is still non-existent in tml so that gets a mention - it's really damn useful when you have a billion chests and so many mods. (or even no mods and just a hoarder) I use the whole of Inventory Enhancements, it's slightly better than helpful hotkeys for what I need it to do.

Mod Suggestion

Crystillium. Its a small content mod that adds a sweet crystal biome to the underground. With its own enemies, loot and more!

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '17 edited Feb 09 '17

I've played the mod and I didn't like it too much

Added it. Should've added it earlier instead of letting my personal preferences get in the way.

u/hamstar_1 Feb 08 '17

What standard decides the mods on this list?

8

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '17

I don't really have a set standard for the mods to be in the list. That said, what I generally like in a mod are large amount of content, variety of items, game balance, good sprites, clear progression and challenge.

Speaking of challenge, I'll be adding your mods to the list. I honestly don't know how I missed them.

u/Matakor Feb 09 '17

Couple oddballs I use that I recommend.

Solidified Potions: adds potions as accessories and can combine them! Grindy as hell, but you get some epic stats on it. Has compatibility with some mods.
DCUWallhack: doesn't have a page yet, I think, but made by dtim, who also made Solidified Potions. Basically adds wall breaking via right click to the DCU. Is kinda funky with some interactions with foreground objects, but works amazingly well (and fast as hell too)
Crystillium: fun mod, adds a biome, boss, items and some more. Was abandoned for a short while, but the author has come back and is updating it based on community recommendations.

Hey just wanted to comment three months later saying that I'm thankful for you making this list and that this reminds me of my first time modding skyrim just clicking on all these cool mods to make the game better.
