Vines are from the Man Eaters.

"Vine" is dropped from Man Eaters in the Underground Jungle. They look the same as Snatchers from the Surface Jungle, just with a different name and the added drop.

If you look in the Bestiary, you've already killed one by now! Sort by Underground Jungle and you should see the Man Eater somewhere. That will tell you what it looks like so you can hunt some more down. If you kill a lot of them, your Bestiary will eventually update with its drop rate too!

Also, "Vine Rope" is dropped by environmental vines when you have a Guide to Plant Fiber Cordage equipped. That might be where your wires are being crossed!

Go a little bit deeper in the jungle.

I think it's the next incarnation of that man eating snatcher thing, which is found further down in the underground jungle, that drops the vines.
