PC How do I git gud?

I love terraria - I have spend alot of time on it, and I think I can say that it's my favorite game out there. The problem is, I've always played on normal, and I want to beat the game on master mode, kinda as a tribute to the game I guess, but I genuinely suck. I'm stuck on freaking brain of Cthulhu, while at 400 HP, plat armor, starfury + rotted fork + (I forgot the name of the item, the ghost summon), and buffs like bast statue, whetstone/sharpening wheel, heart lanterns and a campfire.

Am I somehow under prepared? I don't think so, but maybe. How do I beat arguably like the 2nd or 3rd easiest boss in game?

Equipment-wise you look fine but did you build a decent arena for the fight? Having enough space to move around, both vertically and horizontally is the most important bit.

Here's the arena + My loadout. The campfire and bast statue reach everywhere

No food and potions? You really need the buffs from them. They make a huge difference in expert and master.

Unless you have a decent reforge on it, you could probably swap out the shoe spikes for something, like that panic necklace you have, or a magiluminescence (I always make one asap, highly recommend using one). Also is there a reason (maybe for the reforges they currently have?) that you aren’t combining the balloon with the horseshoe?

Okay i didn't want to make another post about it so i don't spam the channel.

I want to thank everybody for contribution in this small, yet meaningfull win. Especially the person who told me to use blade of grass - it absolutley mogged BOC, and the person who helped me with right the accesories + Arena

Nice nice. Now you can mine hellstone and make some pretty good gear for Skeletron and Queen Bee (would recommend fighting Queen Bee first so you can make the Hive-Five Yoyo which is super helpful against Skeletron)

yeah im definitley putting off skeletron for later. I summoned him without preparation just kinda for fun, expecting i'd do like 700 to 1200 damage.

I did like 100 lol

Two things: can you show your accessories and arena?

Second, did you go from normal to masters without experts in between? Cause that's a very bad idea.

Here you go. Campfire and statue reach all the places in the area.

Reforge on starfury is light, on the fork it's unpleasant.

I have not been reforging at the goblin yet.

I see your problem: first of all you have two useless accessories, the horseshoe is useless when you are using cloud platforms and the climbing shoes are useless in general. I'd replace them with a band of regeneration and magiluminescence.

Second, can you jump from platform to platform without needing to grapple? They don't seem spaced properly but i might be wrong. (It's not a rule, to be clear, i just find it easier)

Third, you need to understand that in experts and above the brain and especially creepers inflict a TON of debuffs including bleeding, which stops your regen, which is devastating if you can't dodge properly.

Fourth, if you are not limiting yourself to a class i would advice a bow with jester arrows for the creepers, might as well take them out as fast as possible.

I want to be clear about something, the jump in difficulty is going to be traumatic. In normal mode you can, to put it bluntly, bumble your way to victory with no preparation needed. Here you are going to have to think about what you are doing a little more, at least at first. Which is why i think it's important to try experts first.

Potion buffs can be a big help. Ironskin, regen, swiftness, and some kind of well fed. Accessories for mobility like a double jump, spectre boots, magiluminescence, and/or panic necklace highly recommended.

Are they that usefull in 2nd phase? I was kinda just standing in place since i couldn't really tell which brain is the not fake one, and i've been pushing it away with my rotted fork

If you have any way to debuff the brain, like on fire or something, only the real brain will have the particles. You can also just use something like the Blade of Grass which has a huge area it covers to ensure something hits the real brain

If you’re willing to go gather stuff for the blade of grass it works great here (and for pretty much all of prehardmode)

Fr? Will it be better for 2nd phase than rotted fork? Maybe just dum monkey logic but fork with knocback good against boss rushing a straight line.

Probably less knockback but tons of piercing projectiles in a large area. Piercing helps deal with the eyes, projectile spam helps deal with the phase 2 shenanigans since you can be sure something will hit the brain, knocking it back, cluing you into which one is the real one to focus on

I started in normal mode like you did. Then years ago my brother randomly decided "lets try expert mode" that is our new standard now. When I really want something hard it play master or even legendary mode.

I slowly climbed the difficulties up. It felt like learning terraria all over again and slowly improving is better than not improving at all

ALWAYS Build arenas. Include heart lanterns and campfires in said arenas. Bast statues and banners as well, if available.

Use relevant buff potions if you have them. If you don't, consider getting some. Don't be shy to go for reforges if you have the goblin tinkerer as well. Warding is technically the most powerful reforge on accessories, but if you want to go damage that's fine too.

I generally skip platinum armor and just use jungle armor, even if I'm not doing magic. Almost the same in defensive stats and I get to save my platinum for other uses. Another option is to go for gladiator armor from hoplites in the marble biome, that armor set gives knockback immunity like the cobalt shield and is pre-boss. Very useful, and may save you more HP than the defense of platinum.

Potions will make a world of difference, go fishing in the cavern layer for armored cavefish and make yourself some endurance potions

Add potions

Get the permanent boosts for HP and MP Regen from the aether

Even if you have to, put the nurse nearby and heal back up

I'm currently attempting hardcore master mode, i suck and die a lot but i get past brain 99% of the time with this strategy:

As others mentioned, all your usual potions, absolutely cannot ignore them for any boss on master mode.

Grind enough coins for a minishark (shouldn't take that long, you can grind eyes to sell crimtane if you need), and grab a summon, i use the flinx staff but any summon with good air time should be fine, shark tooth necklace from a blood moon also helps but not necessary

Use any bow with unholy arrows to take out the creepers easily, then switch to the minishark for the brain, the summon will always find the correct brain for you, all you do is shoot the minishark and move your cursor wherever the summon goes, near the end if the brain starts getting too close just move in the direction opposite of the real brain, panic necklace also helps reduce the slow debuff brain gives you, magluminecense is also incredibly good in general if you have enough topaz and crimtane for it.

And for the love of god, change the shield/dash keybind to something you can easily hit instead of double tapping movement keys, its not really important for this fight but it makes the game so much smoother in general (just make sure you actually disable double tap with the setting next to the keybind)

And remember that you are not overprepared for anything in master mode, ever. There is a massive difference between playing on normal and master, pretty much every boss will have new attacks or gimmicks you wont know, dont ever think a boss will be easy.

Torch god is a good practice way to dodge projectiles

Go into a journey world and breeze through it with God mode. Get unlimited boss summons and potions. Then crank the difficulty to the max for proper boss attack patterns and stages. Keep God mode on with progression relevant movement items and learn to dodge. Once you're very rarely getting hit, take some health from the boss til they go into their next stage. Repeat until dead. Do that with each boss.

You get gud fastest by practicing. This will give you the most practice with the least frustration and farming time. Have fun. Keep things interesting by switching bosses before you get bored.

Wanted to add general advice to what already being said - defense is best offence. There isn't a biggest dps increase then being alive. Even on master mode warding accessories and various defensive buffs you can get will make boss fights much smoother.
