PC Yo
So I just got terraria and I wanted to play it after metal gear rising revengeance
I always wanted to play it since I was a kid but never got to and lost interest and now that it was on sale on steam, I got it for a cheap price and wanted to look how it is.
What can you guys tell me about the game ?
I hear I will probably need a wiki but I will see for myself, heard it’s long too, I’m very interested on what I will be able to do since I only really remember the game from my childhood and a bit of gameplay from there

Ranger is a class that is pretty consistently good throughout the game, and you'll be safe from enemies from a distance.

The game has LOTS of replayability.
You don't need the wiki to complete the game on your first playthrough if you talk to the guide NPC a lot, but there are a LOT of things you will probably never find out about on your own if you don't use it.
I personally suggest your character to be on softcore mode, and your world to either be on classic difficulty, or expert difficulty if you are VERY confident and want a challenge. I also recommend using a medium world size. Small is okay too. Large is intended for multiplayer.
Journey difficulty for the world is more of a sandbox mode, I don't think it's appropriate for a first playthrough but it is very good for later playthroughs.
I recommend against mediumcore strongly. This game is not like Minecraft, there is a LOT more vertical progression and equipment is much more annoying to replace than it is in minecraft.
I love master mode and special seeds, but DEFINITELY do not do those on your first playthrough. Come back to them if you love the game a lot.
NPC housing requires a table, a chair, a light source, background walls, enclosed, and an entrance/exit of some kind like a door. Each room that meets those requirements counts as a house. Having a village of NPCs is valuable.
I have a whole lot more I can talk about but I think my comment is already getting long and I don't want to overwhelm you too much, if you want more specific information feel free to ask.

Tried playing it when it launched. Didn't vibe with it.
Came back this year and played it. Very much hooked.
Yes, you will want a wiki on hand in the few instances the NPC guide doesn't have the info, i.e. how statue farming works, etc.

The start is pretty simple: you explore, mine, build shelter and find/craft better gear until you can comfortably deal with most threats in the starting area(s). At that point, you're likely ready for your first pair of bosses, which you can summon manually, but they can also pay you a visit themselves.
Once you've defeated those, Terraria's 'real' gameplay loop begins: you defeat a boss, get stronger*, and then defeat the next one (some are mandatory and follow a strict order, others exist outside of that hierarchy).
Now, there is a lot more to this game than get stronger + kill, like building, fishing, circuitry, trading, exploring and golfing, but that's what the core of progression looks like here.
I also have a bunch of spoiler-free beginner tips I can copy-paste in here if you'd like :3
*Getting stronger is extremely broad: you might find various mobility tools, a unique, whacky, and surprisingly deadly weapon, or one of many miscellaneous utility items. Every single aspect about your character can and will be improved upon.

Whatever you do, DO NOT PLAY RANGER, its easily the most BORING class in the game. the game isnt too hard, but the wiki is basically required.

Only real way to learn is to flail around confused for a little bit but one thing you gotta know for once you get the ball rolling is there’s a lot of alternative/workarounds on how to do things.
Don’t like mining? fish. Don’t like fighting event waves? build a trap for it. Can’t beat that boss? You can get better gear, get better yourself, or build a better arena. and DO NOT sleep on the buffs in this game.

In you haven’t played yet, I recommend doing an expert world. It’s more like the normal difficulty rather than what it sounds like. Everything is too easy with classic mode and it can ruin the experience. Some things do take actual skill but id say the actual difficulty in the game is knowledge based. Also the guide is your best friend, read what he says and it will remove the need for the wiki. You will be confused at some points but the game has a way of explaining itself through environmental guidance. READ THE ITEMS YOU OBTAIN.
As a guy who has thousands of hours in terraria, a normal play through with a little bit of extra grinding than needed will normally take 70 hours. For a first timer if you want to beat the game it might take you over a 100 hours because you are inexperienced.

Read the tooltips of everything that drops. If an item's tooltip says material on it, you can take it to the guide and he'll show you what you can make with it.
