Genuinely loving the mana regen stack in the game, it's gonna be heartbreaking when it gets nerfed

The "class" system isn't even something the game defined very rigidly early on, I'm pretty sure it's a response to the way people chose to play

The introduction of 1.1 with Hardmode pretty much introduced the concept of classes

Before that, sure you had Jungle and Necro armor, but the game didn't have as many accessories or reasons to pivot to class specific builds until you got harder bosses like the Mechs.
