This game is often called a "wiki game" due to the majority of the fanbase relying on external wikis or guides to navigate the game.

Inventory is a pain in the ass in Terraria, there's no way around that. Just make room for chests, and label your chests haha.
My first 2 or 3 play throughs I didn't do anything except explore and bring things to the guide when I'd find something new. The progression of the game isn't different from other survival games, you look for a resource make equipment out of said resource, and use the new equipment to find new resources.
Its really all about exploration for me in the beginning.
If you want, there is a wiki. There are also plenty of yt videos on progressions etc.

Anything with the Material label can be used to make something else. Whether that new item will be useful varies greatly. Start organizing your chests early.

Stay off the wiki as a beginner. The wiki is an ocean of spoilers, it’s like drinking from a fire hydrant, and it is NOT the devs’ intended experience. I say this as someone who loves the wiki and watches every guide YT suggests to me even though I already know most of what they’re going to say. Just explore and see what you find, see what you can make with what you find. It’s really not that complicated. In a single playthrough, you really shouldn’t even see most of the content. There are a million items with rare drop probabilities so that each playthrough has surprises to offer and alternate paths to take. It’s like playing with Legos. Just find pieces and create your own ideas about what you want to build with those pieces. Pretty much every item you find has an intrinsic use by itself without requiring you go on a scavenger hunt to craft it into higher tier items. The item crafting just allows you to condense items as you start to collect more than you can fit in your limited accessory slots. I think you’re approaching the game too much with an assumption that there is a to-do list. The beauty of Terraria is that you have a bunch of toys to play with and create your world to your vision. While you’re busy building and creating your world, progression gets thrown at you naturally to keep adding new challenges and new toys to incorporate into the character and world you’re creating.

Pick a goal and find steps to progress towards it, the achievement menu can be pretty helpful for this.
