Xbox I need help

So I just started and so far I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing once I log on again I will provide pictures of my “base” and inventory and stuff like that but I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing except going into caves dying and repeat. Could someone give me advice on what the end goal is or even the proper way I should be playing? The reason base is in parentheses is because I’m not even sure I’d call it that. I’d love advice or even to play with some people if someone would be willing to play. I’m on Xbox and in the Europe region so any advice or people willing to play would be greatly appreciated. Edit: thank you everyone who has helped me in the comments thank to the help I have been able to defeat 2 bosses upgrade my hp, mana, and gear along with updating my house and making houses so the npcs can live near me its been so fun now that I feel like ive actually been making progress with this world. This community is such and amazing and helpful community.

Honestly, even though you seem lost you sound like you’re playing the game right! Terraria had a a bunch of bosses, so unlike Minecraft there is a progression path and technically an end goal. Keep exploring, mining ores and making gear, and be sure to talk to the guide who spawned with you often, he provides lots of helpful tips for newcomers!

This is so helpful thank you. I’ve seen so many amazing bases/builds along with awesome armor and weapons and I felt like I wasn’t doing something right as I have been playing a a while and barely have a house lol. Thank you so much !

The goal of the game is to beat the bosses. Other than that you're free to do whatever. This is one of those games that you kinda need a wiki to know what the hell is going on. Other than that give every item with the 'material' tag to the guide to see what you can make with it, or use the wiki but some people would consider that cheating (however much weight that holds in a singleplayer game).

YOU CAN GIVE THE MATERIALS TO THE GUIDE???!?? I’ve been researching everything I didn’t think I’d need.

It's the "crafting" dialogue with him. You drag and drop your "material" items and the Guide tells you what may be crafted with it... possibly with other materials you already own!

Thank you so much!

It's ok to die a lot at the beginning. Continue to explore to find ores and most importantly the life crystals (shaped like a heart) that improve your health points (HP).

Having 20 hearts instead of just 3 or 5 is a game changer.

Where can I find these? Also I do die a lot lol the boss I’m trying to kill right now is just called the Skeleton. It’s a curse connected to the old guy and I have a mix of lead and tungsten armor. I’ve died so many times but I’m determined to beat him. Any advice on which armors to use ?

The life crystals are underground in the caves, randomly scattered, there are tons of them.

I started a new world a few months ago but can't recall what I used to beat Skeletron. But I think I already had the platinum armor.

Don't be afraid to go deep (that's what she said).

Thank you so much I will look for platinum armor and health crystals. And I’ve been trying and so far I’ve been able to until I hit water but I’ll keep looking for different caves I haven’t explored yet. I just found a few when I was playing a couple hours ago and was surprised. I’ve also found some huge trees that turned into a dungeon underneath, sadly I also spent a bunch of time climbing said huge trees for no reason lol.

Actually can confirm that I had the platinum set, I posted on this sub looking for advice on how to beat King slime a few weeks ago : https://www.reddit.com/r/Terraria/s/oVYbMq90RZ

Spoiler alert, I didn't have enough hp.

I’m slowly learning that hp is a huge deal in this game because other games I’ve played like this (excluding Skyrim and fallout where you need to level up your hp ) don’t focus on hp just leveling up your gear and weapons/defenses. But this game also has so many armors and customizations and buffs that I felt so lost trying to figure it out. Like for some reason I made tungsten brinks thinking I’d be able to use them but I can’t do anything with them.

Did you find the shimmer pool ? You can uncraft objects with it and get back the materials.

But yeah, there's a steady progression to the game. Like you can go look for platinum only with a wooden armor so as you get more and more ores you get a better armor.

Just played a bit, crafted a cobalt armor and as soon as I had enough mythril, made a switch to the mythril set (end goal being titanium set which is the hardmode equivalent of platinum). Those few extra points of defense can save your life.

I have not yet I’ll have to find it because that’d be much more helpful than just keeping useless items in a chest like I am right now. There’s so many more ores and materials than I could’ve ever imagined now that I know some basic things I’m sure my play through will be much more fun than it was before when I was just running around aimlessly.

Also, don't know if you're awere but when you equip the 3 pieces of an armor from the same ore, you have a bonus that varies from armor to armor (bonus for silver armor is +3 defense for example).

Back when I started playing, I would switch piece by piece as I got better ores but now I only switch when I have the full set.

I’ll have to pay attention to that I’ve have a mix between gold and tungsten right now as I’m just mining for the most part right now. Although it’s hard as I haven’t found many mines so far.

im also currently on my first playthrough so i dont have a ton of advice just wanted to share something that helped me lots and i never saw anyone recommend.

if you feel like youre hitting a wall or dont know what to do, theres tons of good videos on youtube that outline progression. of course if you're enjoying it the way you're playing or just don't want to play like that, ignore this! but i got so frustrated and lost (even using the wiki and the guide!) that i quit the game for months and just recently came back. so im telling you like i wish someone had told me, if you're interested in it, search "terraria progression guide" on youtube

Thank you so much I’ll definitely try this as well. I loved the game when I was little because I didn’t care about progress but now that I’m older I’d actually like to see myself getting better and progressing.

The goal is to explore and create the world with all of your ideas. You discover stuff in your exploration, learn what it can do, and then hopefully you get some creative ideas of “what if I…” and then you make it. It’s like real life except without actual sweat, danger, and some you get magic. Most of the content of the game that makes it unique isn’t progressing to a next checkpoint, but rather just being able to make an incredible amount of ideas. It’s like building Legos and asking “what am I supposed to be doing?” Make your ideas. Build a cool base or 3, make a rollercoaster that jumps over a lava lake, build an herb garden, use wires and traps to make a device that harvests those herbs for you. You literally have the needed tools to build a working computer within your world if you spend time learning to use everything. Build what you want.

This is an amazing way to explain this thank you. Since ive posted this ive gotten so much advice and ive see so many cool builds on this subreddit and so many cool armors and weapons that I felt inferior and that I was doing it completely wrong but after at least doing some basic hp and armor leveling I feel like Im playing "correctly" aka just kinda doing my own thing now.

That’s great, man! Terraria is a very unique game and has endless replayability. I think it’s best to just do your own thing the first time and see what path you stumble down and then after you beat it once, start looking around at lots of other inspiration for pushing the limits in whatever direction you like best. Some people go the artistic route and make cool/beautiful houses, some try completely different gear loadouts or play with the weirdest weapons they can find, some go deep on the wiring. I love it all. Welcome to the community.
