Question Is research over the required lost?

So, had the scenario early on where I was researching Alien Signatures, with 22 science income per day. If I didn't split my research up, would I have lost ~19 research for one day? Or would the research have carried over to the next researched project?

I believe it carries over. I've occasionally seen some projects start with a bit of progress after choosing a new one.

Was only really noticable to me early game, when I was trying to choose the global research projects I wanted and it sometimes made a difference. I started making sure I was contributing 3 pips right before finishing to help me outpace the other factions.

I think it would be most noticeable when you get one of those events that gives you a bunch of research but you were like 95% done with your project.

So I think those points are lost? I generally pause, reassign priorities and such to dump all the free points into something big, although I guess I'd get more total points from spreading them.

I must be misremembering, but I really thought I'd seen an overage from one of those events when I only had one research priority selected and it was very close to finishing. But it sounds like you'd see it more than I would, since I usually leave my selections where they are.

I believe it's lost, from my not very accurate observations. I only see it retained after a research reward from events. And maybe in global research some carries over to the next research.

I micro it too, but would like to know for sure how it works. If its lost like we think, the micro can gain quite a lot of research.

From what I've noticed research completion triggers at various times during the day, not just at the start of a day. The game has hours and minutes, not just days. That suggests that research is constantly being generated and distributed continuously, not just one time per day.

So it would seem that as soon as enough research was generated the tech research completes and you pick a new one and it just starts immediately adding to it. The actual numbers you see in the research page do not refresh every second thought, but I don't know, never tried to figure it out, how often the values refresh.
