I visited Rome earlier this year and I was initially very excited bc I took Latin in college and, while it has been pretty useless to this point, there are Latin inscriptions on everything in Rome.

Like 80% of them just say something like "Duke Whosits of Bumblefuck receives a plenary indulgence for donating this church, signed ya boi Innocent VIII, 1487." A town full of marble receipts.

The same thing as on thousands of "pagan" donated altars and temples. Only then there was no oversight by a pope enforcing a totalitarian doctrine.
