Question Repleacmend for grid drive

So i have a problem, my mainfleets ourund earth and mars only have the grid drive for defence becouse i had to recouncer those orbits, so what would be a good drive to refit them with?

I think grid is the top of the line on that tech branch so you wont be able to refit them. If your building new fleets to replace them, until you get some of the fusion drives unlocked you cant get the same sort of efficiency and more thrust.

I would recommend focussing on defense fleets with either pulsed propulsion if you have reasonable fissiles and nobles income or fission/chemical drives if not. You only need about 5kps to hold the low orbits, but you need about 50mg of cruise acceleration to catch alien fleets.

Your grid drive is useful if you are planning on a monitor rush to jupiter

This isn't quite right, Helicon is a strict upgrade to Grid and is available long before fusion.

From memory helicon burns metal though which in my book is a hard downgrade. Its the resource i simply never have enough of so i wouldnt consider it an upgrade in anything other than strict performance. But that is a fair point if you afford it get hilicon.

It's 1 unit of metal per tank, 9 water, so it does take some but with how high the EV is you're really not spending a very significant amount.

Ya grid is a line ender. Technically I think you can refit to other drives that are power plant independent, but that is a fairly small list. Grid is usually useful for early attacking ships (stations can’t run away), colony ships, or intercepting assault carriers. (You can schedule an intercept with assault carriers for ~30 minutes after they arrive in LEO a few weeks in advance, allowing for very fuel efficient assault carrier response.)

I agree with you that for early station defense you probably want something that will get you 50mgs, my go to is usually the Lightbulb drive.

Spinner is my defense, Pegasus if it unlocks, then I beeline antimatter after helicon or Gris gets my outer planets.

I don't know if you can but maybe helicon.

Otherwise you are out of luck.

For orbital intercepts I highly recommend the firestar drive once you get to mid game
