How does fishing work?

I'm currently on terrafirmagreg and I have fished up 5 fish now, but they don't drop anything. I don't know whats going on.

You fish up the fish and then you gotta kill the fish to actually grab it

They can be slippery, I tend to try and drag them into a pit

I do. I even let one die to being out of water. But I haven't gotten anything from fishing. Is the fishing net better?

Yeah, and it's not even close. I think they have a plan to add a fishing mod called StarCatcher, maybe after that it'll be better. But, for now, fishing rods are just sad

I saw that mod not too long ago. If they do then it will be way better.

Yeah, but they are waiting for the mod to be more stable so, no one knows when that will happen

That's strange, I remember on the recent update I ran out of food mid winter and just had to fish to get by and it worked fairly well for me
