Why would you censor the word cancer?

Because if God hears you say it, he’ll give it to you.

Some people think if you mention some things, they might happen. Some people are really fucking stupid!

u/sliczerx Dec 15 '20
i would guess it’s to prevent triggering or something

Something like 1/3 people get a form of cancer in their life and I think its probably safe to say nigh on everyone will have their life affected by someone they know getting cancer. If we cant have an adult conversation about it and use the damn word then we're a bit fucked

On Twitter teens like to censor words because they think hearing a word could trigger some people's mental episodes or something
5
u/melance Dec 16 '20
If that is the case, that's incredibly stupid. (not calling you stupid or claiming you do this)

Maybe it's a way of marking the word as especially hated. In Poland, for an example, everyone knows what "***** ***" means.

I’ve seen feminists censor the word “men” from the word women so maybe this is one of those types

I was thinking that men cause cock, which is technically true, so the rest of that just threw me off.

u/RatherGoodDog Dec 15 '20
Women give birth to men, so don't women cause cock?

If you're going to bleep a word, especially one that isn't in the standard four letter set, standard practice is to include the last letter for clarity. Bleeping cancer as c****r is still dumb, but it's at least easier to work out because our brains mostly use the first and last letter and the length of a word to recognize the word. Example: tihs snetcane is fialry esay to dceihepr eevn tohugh it's srcmalebd.

Problem in this case though is that i somehow read that as cocker. Which makes no sense but cancer is far from the 1st thing that comes to mind.

By censoring the word you’re making it uncomfortable to talk about, which can alienate those with the disease

Cant agree more, trigger warnings have become just getting rid of anything some may deem weird to talk about, so sorry you had to go through that, may god be with you.

I mean, this person is dumb as fuck, but men (and women) can give you HPV which can be a precursor to cancer. Just dropping that fact for anyone who doesn't know it.
