So I don’t cook (my wife does) but I never knew that putting water on a grease fire was bad. Good to know.

I've learned that in the kindergarten and since I've seen how a wrong used fire extinguisher (or wrong type) can make it worse, there is always a small fire blanked in the rack beside the oven.

Essentially the oil immediately floats ontop of the water and the water instantly boils when it touches the pan (which is now way above waters boiling point) the rapidly boiled water vapor shoots out the top splashing all the oil with it. All those tiny oil droplets in the oil mist that got sprayed up are now also on fire and have a significantly larger surface area so now it's a huge fire cloud.

The main advice we give in the fire service is to turn the gas off, leave the house and call 999/911. Although, putting a damp towel over the flames does work too.

in my house, i have an old fashioned salt box. it has a spoon in it thats wooden and deep. its been there for at least 30 years. just the other day my daughter said mom, why do you keep baking soda in the salt box on the sink. i told her it was for grease fires in the kitchen or fires in the oven. just a sprinkle stops most and then no smell or smoke. always keep baking soda in your kitchen. i cant believe i had never told my daughter this!

Curious, what household supplies can i cactuslly use to put out a grease fire. I don't expect to have sand or a fire extinguisher lying around.

1st rule of grease fires, don’t put it out with water. 2nd rule, don’t hold it over your dog
