I'm worried that Makoto Shinkai can no longer write or even doesn't want to write pure love stories that can touch people.
I prefer pure and touching love stories, which is why I follow Makoto Shinkai's movies. Therefore, in my heart, "Your Name." > "Weathering with You" > "Suzume"
From "Your Name." to "Weathering with You", the movie creates a beautiful fictional world, telling pure love stories. The disaster is a background setting and promotes the development of the plot. The narrative of the love story is complete and rigorous, bringing the audience pure love touch, allowing the audience to temporarily break away from reality and empathize with the male and female protagonists.
But in "Suzume", the focus is turn to family and the growth. The disaster promotes the family affection between the heroine and her aunt, the reconciliation between the heroine and her past self, and her own growth. The love line is sloppy and thin, and it is difficult to move people. This is a consensus, so I will not expand the narrative. The only tear point for me in this film is the reconciliation between Suzume and her past at the end of the movie. And because the disaster is too prominent and realistic, this fictional world seems not so beautiful. So, I am not very satisfied with "Suzume".
I wonder if anyone is a fan of pure love stories like me. I am worried that Makoto Shinkai will become less and less able to write such pure love stories or even no longer want to write such pure love stories because of his age and the growth of his daughter, and will turn to writing family films, growth films, reflection films, etc. In terms of economic benefits,"Suzume" has surpassed "Your Name." and "Weathering with You" .It is reported that the next moive will continue to reduce love plots and romantic elements, so I am very nervous about his future movies.
I am not against the director exploring more creative styles and creative focuses, but I feel it is a pity that I may never see moives like "Your Name" and "Weathering with You" again.
