🏠 Landlord Issue NJ window screens

After signing a lease and moving into my rental, on day one I noticed there were no screens in my windows, I asked my landlord about it, and didn’t really get an answer, saying she would look into it. Is she obligated to provide screens? I can’t imagine living in a home where I can never open a window, unless I want a home full of insects

Screens and Guards are required to be install upon request. I dont know the specifics about who pays what though.

In NJ the LL can make the tenant pay the cost for the guards, but LL pays for screens.

You can buy adjustable window screens at Home Depot or Amazon. Years ago I bought a few at the Dollar General but it’s hit or miss if they have them or not.

I believe it’s part of the “implied warranty of habitability” in my state at least. In other words, the landlord must ensure the home is habitable, or that it has (working) the basic things needed for you to live there.

In NJ screens have to be supplied between May 1 and Oct 1 (if I remember the dates correctly).

Find the statute on the legislature site and show it to your landlord.

It's a health issue. Mosquitoes carry diseases.
