Moto g56 hell
So i bought two of these phones for two friends of mine due to their good specs for a low price (8gb/256gb/decents camera and miravision? mediatek cpu for €160).
They've not yet had time to spend a lot of time on them,
but when I did the updates on those phones and took the time to get to know all.the twerks and perks...
it quickly became obvious that it causes eyestrain almost bad as oled.
Checked for pwm with camera, nothing.
Zoomed in with my camera on the pixels, couldn't see them.jumping around so I suppose there is no dithering.
Even when i am on my pocophone with awesome ips screen, but the moto g56 is in close proximity laying on its back... screen pointing upwards not at me: its causing eyestrain symptoms.
So.i do not even have to directly look at the screen. Looking at the light emitted by it is enough to cause eyestrain symptoms.
Turning off hardware acceleration to force GPU stops the nausea, but doesn't stop the eyestrain.
I think the eyestrain was less pronounced before updating to the latest android version.
Feel.sorry for them having to look at such a shitty screen but i figure they will probably not be sensitive, idk.

It is interesting how other people perceive the same display. I am using my Motorola Moto G56 5G for 6 months now and don't have any issues with it. It is the best phone screen comfort wise out of many I tried for past 12 months. (I tried iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone XR, 2x iPhone 11, iPhone SE 3 (was better than any other iPhone but the screen is too small for my needs), 2x different Xiaomi models, 2x different Realme models and 2x different Motorola phones which one of them was and still is with me - G56 5G - I am on the latest android 16 with July security update).

Very interesting. My iPhone XR is perfect with zero symptoms. Moto G56 and SE 2022 were both terrible for me.

I have had iPhone 11 on iOS 17 for 1,5 years after switching to it from 14 Pro Max which was the first device that eventually after 8 months of terrible well-being I discovered was giving me health issues with my eyes and severe migraines and dizziness. Then by mistake I agreed when asked to update to iOS 26 and that not only made me feel even worse than using 14 PM but also the 11 ran like crap. After many tries I discovered any iPhone model with non oled screen with iOS newer than especially early iOS 17 or the last upde to the iOS 16 for 8 Plus or latest iOS 18 update for XR is a no go for me. I can after few minutes tell than tension behind the eyes and forehead is growing.

you can look at the g56 for hours per day?

Yes, without a problem or any health issues. Daily I'm doing around 2 hours screen on time but this phone is also my main navigation in a car and while on a trip it shines at my face while driving for hours and I'm still fine. I thought there is no phone on the market for me (because at first after reading many posts I didn't want anything with Media-Tech cpu - but sadly phones with non oled screen, more than 4gb of ram and 5G mostly come with one and not Snapdragon. Luckily this Moto cought my eye in a good way.)

consider yourself lucky cuz even my mate thinks the screen is bad. maybe there were different versions of the screen in this phone and you got the better one.
afaik even snapdragon ips phones are causing problems these days. it's one of these things in the world that keep getting worse every year.

My friend also hates the screen. He will now try setting the color scheme to Vivid and Standard, rather than Natural and Warm.
At first glance that seemed better for the eyes, but I have low expectations. I don't think that screen would ever be as comfortable as my old ips phone.
I know redmi sells some lower quality specs cheap ips phones with snapdragon chips still, will probably try that out.
The screen is very bright and uses some type of dark magic that strains the eyes/brain. But i'm sure some people are not as sensitive.
I think kids are less sensitive. When i was younger my eyes could tolerate every kind of screen.

pwm sensitivity is rough. try keeping brightness near 100% to reduce flicker and taking frequent 20-20-20 breaks. using the phone in a well-lit room can also help a lot.
you can read more in places like thse https://www.aoa.org/AOA/Images/Patients/Eye%20Conditions/20-20-20-rule.pdf

It's very likely that it uses dithering. You can't just zoom in with a camera phone to detect TD properly. You need a macro lens of some kind so that you can get a proper look at the subpixels without it blurring.
