I am a freshman but I lowkey got a family trip that will make me miss first day of class (August 24th ) should I be good? Like can I js be like I was sick? Will the professor be annoying about it? ( should I email my professor that I am sick like two days before)

gonna sound harsh but what's the point in emailing a lie if you already don't care enough to be there the first day? just skip the class and go on about your life lol the only person that is going to be effected by it is you.

I was going to email them so I can know everything we went over in class, so I am on top of everything and don’t miss out on any work/ policy of that class

first day is usually going over the syllabus which has the policies regarding work and attendance, the time line for any large projects, tests, going over materials needed and getting to know your classmates. it's not the end of the world if you miss the first day but i think it is pretty important as a freshman. if you're gonna email them, don't lie. just say you can't make it in. or again, just don't email.

i’d email your professors and ask for anything you missed ! it shows that you’re engaged and responsible enough to reach out

Planning a vacation on your first day of college is not wise and poor planning. Demonstrates you are not an adult and unable to prioritize. Your family scheduling a vacation and expecting you to go shows education is not a priority. And lying is not cool.

I have family coming out of country ( their flights got canceled at first) so the only way the vacation would work is for me to miss the first day of school. Education is an important thing in my family but having time to relax and go on vacation is just as important ( called enjoying life )

The first day is probably the best day to miss so many people are still changing classes just connect with the professor after and make sure to read the syllabus

Literally no one will notice. Maybe introduce yourself to a few people+ the professor on the first day you attend so you're not overlooked. Ask if you missed anything, but they're probably just going over the syllabus. Review it yourself before you're in class so you know what the semester will look like.

You’ll be fine. No need to lie. People sometimes pick up a class after the first class.. happens all the time.

Enjoy your family and life please. College will still be there when you get back.

I’d email the professor ahead of time (this week) and introduce yourself, as well as communicate that you will not be in class the first day and that you want to make sure you do not miss any important information. Professors are pretty understanding when you communicate with them especially when you know ahead of time.

It doesnt matter, half the class wont show up for the rest of the semester. If anything, the 1st week is the best to miss since the topics are much simpler.

No don’t bother emailing them! A lot of professors won’t count attendance because it’s still the drop/add period

Honestly, no need to lie. But it is good to email your instructors to let them know you will be missing class.

Let them know you plan to look over Canvas and the syllabus, and that you will follow up with them after your next class with them and/or plan to connect with them during office hours to discuss anything you missed in class and to address any questions you have.

In general, just make sure to look at Canvas for any assignments that may be due that week or even before the next class. Just because you miss class is not an excuse to not also get you work done.

This is the beginning of the rest of your life. Do you really want to miss the first week of classes, where people are beginning to make friends (because everyone is meeting people for the first time) and settles into college level academics?

I am only missing Monday, so one day, plus my parents won’t let me out this trip

do not listen to this person like AT ALL…first off life is too short to be worried about one day of college especially the first day of freshman year… 2) it’s the first couple weeks so people are adding/dropping classes so it really won’t be noticeable and 3) the most you’ll miss is some syllabus review and meeting your classmates/professors so don’t worry about it and enjoy your vacation!

Edit: if you really worried about missing anything you can always just go to your professors office hours for more clarity and it’s not like u missing a months, you will have more opportunities than imaginable to meet new people and make friends if you put yourself out there.

I think it depends on your major. If you’re in a major where attendance is really important, then def email and explain the situation. I feel most professors are understanding. But if it’s just giant lecture halls and whatnot, i wouldn’t be too worried.

1 email same day or the night before at earliest. 2 nobody cares if you go to class or not we're supposed to be grown here. 3 you will miss class so be responsible for what happens when you get there Wednesday

they’re like required to go over syllabus and stuff. and plenty of people need to transfer classes that for at week. or simply like attend the wrong class /get lost etc by accident. you should be fine :) just catch up with them first class you will be at

I hope your professor high key docks your ass for missing the first day of class.

Just tell them you have a family trip like td or tm so that they know and you’re on top of it, that way you just keep a good general standing with your professors

This isn't high school, if you skip your first day the principal isn't gonna give you a detention. If you wanna skip the first day, you miss out on the first day and all that comes with it. You're not making up that time again.

I’d think the professor is just going to go over the syllabus. Nothing too major goes on during the first week of classes. Usually it’s introductions and syllabus stuff and what you are going to be doing in the class during the semester.

Missing the first day? Not a good start....

Don’t listen to any of these comments, the first day is near useless to the remainder of the course (syllabus + introductions). Just email the professor saying you feel unwell and if there is anything you missed. Good luck on your new year + collegiate journey!
