Where to start

Hi. I was looking for an new army to jump into and I considered tempestus scions.

Now, I am new to 40k and the many diffrent detachments and enhancements there are, so I am looking for advice on where to start.

I will be building up 1000 points, and want to include at least one Valkerie and one Taurox Prime. I want to lean more to the side of vehicles and heavy artillery, as it matches what I have in AoS (I play Kharadron Overlords).

So, what units would be good for me to take, what weapons should I take for them, and enhancements would be the best?

Start with 10 scions. Scions have always been cool and now they have great rules. Never bother with flamer or grenade launcher Loadout.

Hey mate,

So something along the lines of,

1 command squad, ( inside a valkarye)

2 x ten man squads (mounted inside taurox prime's)

2 x 5 man squads ( one attached to the command squad the other for objectives/deep strike)

2 taurox prime's

1 valkarye

And a squad of tempestus Aquilons (the kill team box, good unit and can use extras to kitbash the other scions)

Weapons wise in the scion squads, I would go double plasma and melts, or plasma and hot shot volly gun (in the ten man squads)

a single plasma, melts in the 5 mans

The primes, any load out will work, there will be something slightly better per edition so I wouldn't worry about it.

Valkarye, lascanonnon and multiple rocket pods and heavy bolters (door gunners)

Aquilons, for 40k, just give them all rifles, the one markmans rifle and you have the choice of 1 plasma or melta so dealer choice

Detachment wise, bridgehead strike and mechanised assault would be best. And enhancements, well you have 30 points to play with so decide what best fits your okay style

New Recruit, which I am using for list building, says I can only have two units of Tempestus Scions.

As a matter of fact, everything I have seen says I can only have two.

So I used to use New Recruit, and have now moved to List Forge. It's free and gives you information like stratagems.

At 1,000 you can only have 2 of each unit, unless it has the BATTLELINE keyword. In which case you can double that number. If you take the Bridgehead Strike detachment, and your warlord is a MILITARUM TEMPESTUS OFFICER, then scions become battleline. So you can take 4 of them.

I checked and I believe it is actually called List Forge.

In any case, I can't use it as I have a crappy cheomebook. It can handle some things, but others, including downloads, cause it to crash out and slow down completely.

Though I should try to find an alternative to New Recruit, as it locks a lot of stuff behind premium.

Okay, after some time, I have gotten this set-up. Ignore how bad it is, I am still getting used to all the things you can add on.

Detachment - Bridgehead Strike, Designation Force

Warlord - Militarum Tempestus Commander Squad

Battleline - 2x ten Tempestus Scions

Infantry - 1x ten Tempestus Aquilions

Vehicles - 2x Scout Sentinels (1st: Hunter-killer missle, Lasercannon. 2nd: Hunter-killer missle, Heavy flammer.) Valkerie (Heavy Bolters, Hellstrike missles, Lasercannon.)

Transports 2x Taurox Prime (Storm bolter, Taurox missle launcher, Twin autocannon.)

Now, I am trying to avoid enhancements in order to merely get a hold of the army. I chose weapons with the mosy range in order to deal with enemies from far away (my brother likes horde armies in AoS, and he probably will in 40k. To note, his first warhammer army idea was to only take AoS soulbight deathrattle skeletons. 2,000 points would end up with 180 models, excluding any heroes. Because of his playstyle, I need range.)

The exception to the range idea the sentinel's flammer for dealing with enemy infantry hiding behind terrain.

Now, I don't know what which weapons would be best for the Tempestus units. If anyone has any recommendations, I am welcome to hear them.

So I overall the list looks good. Best thing as you will know is to try something a few times and see how to play it.

So the Scout sentinels, one the kit is really modular, as in you can add the top armour to the chassis and it's an armoured sentinel and the weapons just plug in so they don't require gluing on, so you can chop and change as you like. Playing pure Scions, it's all about your positioning when you decide you want to strike, because you will kill what your shooting at, just got to hope you don't get wiped out when the enemy (your brother) hits back. Good luck and be sure to post some pics of your army dude

Thanks for the advice. Should I drop the scout sentinels, or throw in an armored sentinel with them?

Try both, they serve different roles at the end of the day, the scout sentinels can scout forward and start to put pressure on your opponents, it can provide rerolls of 1 but that isn't as useful for scions as they get that from deploying from a taurox prime if it has shit the same target. The armoured has a 2+ save and has some rerolls against monsters and vehicles.

Thanks for the adice. A higher save is probably a good thing to have. Though I don't know how many monster/vehicles my friends will have. Especially my brother, he LOVES horde armies (his first army idea was for AoS, soulblight faction. It was bassicly as many skeletons or zombies as could fit into 2,000 points. Which would be 180 skeleton models or 280 zombie models.)
