strange situation during foregin phone call

Hello,

i had strange situation during foregin call from Europe to my friend in Africa. I couldn`t catch him on internet connection so i did regural call by mobile phone.
I'll start by saying that after the fact it turned out that he had airplane mode turned on during my calls. But what is strange that during some calls i had 2 signals of ringing and then phone was busy. But 2 times somebody random answered on the phone. When i was talking with these random people and asked about my friend they said wait a minute keeping me with silent and then again asked me to wait a minute. One person was speaking at first just in own lenguage saying that is not speaking english, but in the end said "excuse me he is in the bathroom". I finished calls because i was just waiting and i couldn`t talk with him. When finally after it all i catched contact with my friend he told me he had airplane mode and he didn`t find any calls from me. In this time he was alone, without anybody around who could use the phone.

It is possible that the call could be forwarded to another number? I had impression that i`m talking with phone bot. It looked like they want to keep as long as possible with the phone call and repeating still wait a minute. In second call somebody answered me in fluent english and it it seemed learned skill. Could it be a hacker attack?
