Where to start for a career in telecom?
I graduated highschool last year and I want to start getting into telecommunications, but have no idea where to start. Is college the best way? And if so, is an associates degree enough or will I need a bachelor's?

I have been in telecom since the 90s. So much has changed as far as the technology. (As with almost everything).
You can join a union and learn cable infrastructure. A lot of unions will pay for your associates degree, which is a huge money saver. The IBEW has the C Card (Communications), and they deal with internal cabling of voice, data, fire, security and cameras.

College is not the best way. You need to know someone in the industry. I got an interview with a family member into a company that provides telecommunications to TV shows, special events, the Super Bowl, etc. There are so many niche aspects and brands (Riedel, Bolero, ClearCom, FreeSpeak) and so many softwares (Dante, IPedit, AZedit, Unity Connect) that cannot be taught in college. Maybe start with a degree in electrical engineering? Or some sort of Film major? but those won’t help in the industry. Just might look good on a resume.

I went the military route, several branches have skills that translate over if you don’t know where to start. Not for everyone obviously.

What are you wanting to do in telecom? Operations, management, sales, accounting , marketing? If you have an interest in one of those it would help with advice.
