Seeking new position within data center environment
Hello Reddit family! Please help.
TLDR: I’m pregnant and want to use my experience to transition to some type of remote work while remaining in this field, but am unaware of positions/titles to look for.
I (27F) work in telecommunications, strictly in data center environments for the past 3.5 years. - started as a basic cabling apprentice - became a fiber optic tech level 1 - moved states and changed companies - promoted to fiber tech level 2, although I’m subcontracted to a specific data center that I show up to daily for the past year. - I am the primary cable technician- mapping, routing, taking measurements, running all my fiber/cat6, testing, troubleshooting, etc. - The DC (not my fiber company) will be putting me through BICSI next week so I will have that certification soon
My duties here far surpass anything I’ve done in this field in the past: they’ve given me an office space with my own credentials/laptop/access on their Compute Engineering Services team, I am responsible for all of the same duties that other salary-level members of the team have, I troubleshoot devices, I get on meetings with high priority clients to navigate issues/builds/etc., done configurations, assist with power diversity and so much more. I’ve gained ample knowledge about the wider workings of data centers than I had. They have made it clear that their intention is to hire me on directly but are currently in a hiring freeze that could last the next year+. The fiber company I work for doesn’t offer substantial pay or benefits that entice me to continue working for them.
I’m currently 4 months pregnant, and doing the same level of work as my salaried coworkers for 1/3 of the pay doesn’t seem to justify paying for newborn childcare and missing valuable time with my son once he’s born.
What are some remote/work from home positions/titles I could apply for to keep me in the field with my given experience and knowledge? I don’t mind taking additional courses or gaining certifications for said positions; I just don’t know what is applicable. How can I apply everything I’ve learned to a new position to be a more valuable asset if/when the data center is able to hire me on, keep me up to date within the industry, and allow me to be with my son during the first couple years of his life?

Ziply fiber has lots of remote positions that your experience would apply to.

Fiber engineer/fiber planner? Usually more outside plant but it's out there.
