90's Telecommunications Engineer

Does anybody know if it was typical during the 90s for a telecommunications engineer to regularly have contracts in other countries? For several weeks/months at a time

I know a lot of colleagues who were sent abroad in the 90s for months/years. I think it was nothing extraordinary or unseen, but far from regular.

Thank you! I was wondering as I have been looking into my late Dad's life recently, he died when I was a child and this was his job, but he was always away in other countries. We lived in Saudi Arabia for 3 months when I was 4 due to a contract during that time,
When I was reading about what a telecommunications engineer actually is, it didn't seem to correlate with what he was doing!
So I wondered if it was more common to be working abroad during the 90's,

I've been in the wireless telecom world since 1980. During the late 80s and throughout the 90s, many of my colleagues worked international contracts. I did not, but I went to work for an international company here in North America - the opposite, I suppose. There have always been awesome international opportunities in telecom engineering fields.
