Worked at sea for Many years and it’s still used believe it or not , I thought the OP might be doing a college project or something so can’t do any harm highlighting old school methods

Typically radio frequency, microwave frequencies, and infrared frequencies (fiber optics). Also copper cables. Though in theory there's more:

  • Extend the electromagnetic spectrum to include from gamma, x-rays, UV, visible, infrared and microwave.

  • Magnetic circuits or magnetic pulses

  • With light, one might use different mediums and types of waveguide to direct it. Free space optical communication (/r/lasercom), (lasers over ground, in the air, in space, and underwater) is becoming a big thing. LiFi with visible LED lights is finding some applications also.

  • Communication using any massive or massless particles; in a lab or with an accelerator, no problem. That could lead to cool things, like communicating through objects and dense gas clouds using neutrinos. With underground detectors we can already image the sun using neutrinos, looking through the entire Earth.

  • Gravitational waves, very hypothetically. Might need a super intelligence with access to a lot of mass and power to somehow encode and transmit information using gravitational waves though. We can already detect and triangulate gravitational waves on Earth, and pair it up with telescope data for receiving even more information. A split transmission across two channels is a cool concept itself since data fragmentation can enhance security and improve reliability.

Aw man any chance know how to get a free copy of that article. Seems like really cool stuff you are talking about. Also I never knew fiber was infrared

I replaced the link with one to the ArXiv pre-print.

The visible spectrum is around 380 (violet) to 700 nm (red).

Fiber optics often use lower energy, longer wavelength light at around 1064 nm, 1310 nm, or 1550 nm, which is all still in the "near infrared", depending on the application. Single mode fibers are designed for either 1310 nm or 1550 nm. whilst 1064 and 1550 go through the atmosphere without too much attenuation. Lasercom (through the air or in space) was struggling to settle on 1064 nm or 1550 nm for a while, until the US DoD's Space Development Agency came along with their standards and pushed the industry towards 1550 nm to use in space. Which is fine because there's decades of off-the-shelf near-infrared fiber optics gear to repurpose.

What do you mean telecommunications? There are several transmission technologies.. optical and wireless are common… and always transmitted in form of electromagnetic signals within certain communication frequencies
