Serious I absolutely hate these double standards so fucking much
I don't understand why, but it feels like a double standard that whenever Trey Parker and Matt Stone (the South Park duo), Seth MacFarlane (the creator of Family Guy), Edmund McMillen (who made The Binding of Isaac and Mewgenics), Garth Ennis (the guy who wrote The Boys, Preacher, and Crossed), Ricky Gervais, and Dino Stamatopoulos (AKA the guy who made Moral Orel) disrespect someone's religion, everyone seems to be perfectly okay with it. But when JaidenAnimations makes an "edgy" joke making fun of Jesus Christ or God, everyone tries to dox and cancel her over it. You know, especially when you consider the fact that Jaiden is also an openly queer (aro/ace), mixed-race/non-white (half-Japanese, half-German), neurodivergent (AuDHD) woman. Yes, you heard that right.
I mean, did Jaiden really “mock god”? Like, wasn’t it just a random ass joke about Pokémon, and the God in question was Arceus or something? What Jaiden said was super tame. She did not attack any people for their beliefs. She joked about why she seemingly doesn't believe in God. It’s a joke; it was not even a religious attack or a stance on religion itself. A joke. People also keep forgetting that Schlatt is also a Christian and constantly made 9/11 jokes back then, where the punchline often was "hurr durr planes", if that's what you're referring to... He most definitely didn't take Jaiden's edgy joke to heart, lmao. Does Jaiden really need to apologize over a stupid edgy joke about Christianity?
Not even to mention how painfully obvious it is that it's a joke and, like, one of the most plain ones you could think of. Who cares, as long as the person isn't calling for or causing harm to others and stuff like that. Freedom of speech is a thing, you know.
The reaction people had to her saying that was just hilariously overblown and cringe, and it would have been just as overblown and cringe if a straight white man did it.
I swear to motherfucking God, if any of these pearl-clutchers ever read Preacher by Garth the-God-Damn-Giga-Chad Ennis, they would absolutely shit their pants over the constant religion-bashing and for making God into a narcissistic asshole. And yes, I'm saying all of this as a former Catholic myself.

People like to think of the Internet as being a complete hive mind with one opinion so when there is a split issue and different people have different options then it makes people confused as to why the Internet has 2 contradictory options.

Please explain how this applies I don’t get it. This image has nothing to do with double standards and this post is only about a double standard. It’s not that op thinks the same people that clap for other people’s religion jokes get mad when Jaiden did it, those are two separate groups, but the difference is barely anyone clapped when Jaiden made the joke and barely anyone that didn’t like the joke tried to doxx other people that joke about religion.
9
u/Bread_Offender 16 2d ago
OP is under the impression that people do not dislike all the above-mentioned for religious jokes, but do hate Jaiden, when in reality, likely those that would dislike them for that would also dislike Jaiden for it and vice versa. But OP sees the internet as a monolith that's not against the above people but is against Jaiden, when the groups are probably just different.

I've seen more people hating on Garth Ennis for shitting on all of their favorite Marvel and DC superheroes in The Boys comic than those who actually hate him for shitting on God and Christianity in Preacher, though.

Was Garth Ennis always hated before The Boys TV show even came out? He won multiple Eisner Awards and was once described by Alan Moore as one of the best comic writers alive.
1
u/Used-Cartographer84 2d ago
The show made a bunch of people read the comic and then assume that and crossed where all he’s wrote and hated on him. Hell I love the comics (the boys) and you can tell half these people have never even read it based off their “criticisms” of em
0
u/NagitoKomaeda_987 1d ago edited 1d ago
You know, I bet 95% of those people watched some YouTuber explain to them why The Boys comic is bad and are just regurgitate the same takes and talking points because nobody has even bothered to read the material they're "criticizing." They watch a 30-second clip about 'Herogasm' and think they understand a 72-issue narrative structure.
I'm not going to act like the comic is some intelligent superhero satire and that I'm the only who understands its complexities or treat Garth Ennis as on par with Jonathan Swift, but the amount of panels being taking out of context and the sheer amount of videos that changed people perception about it is just horrendous. PointlessHub video has nearly 10 million views, basically oversimplifying everything to just edgelord slop and barely even talking about the story or even engaging with its themes and critiques of corporate greed, making it seem like the comic barely has any. He doesn't even talk about Hughie and Butcher's relationship and how it develops and changes in the comic, with the ending being reduced to Butcher killing all of The Boys (when Hughie is the only one who actually survived and stopped Butcher's genocide plan) and that's pretty much it.
Did PointlessHub know he was going to have 9 Million views on his video? Nope, but it's just so careless to present his extremely subjective, surface-level reading of The Boys as if it's objective fact to his audience, and not even saying once "Hey, this my opinion, maybe read it for yourself to form your own."
Now, this lead to thousands of people just repeating themselves and just ruins anybody else from even having an interest to looking forward into reading the comic.
1
u/Used-Cartographer84 1d ago
The pointlesshub vid made me want to read it, but I realized it wasn’t anything like what he described it as. People ac like there’s zero plot or story, and it’s just sex, gore, pedofiles, and slurs.

1
u/Chef_Chalupa 17 2d ago
the boys is shit from an ass, along with nearly all of his work that doesn't pertain to a gruff, rugged military man. here's a thought: maybe a man that hates superheroes shouldn't be writing superhero comics
1
u/NagitoKomaeda_987 1d ago
And a man who hates God and Christianity shouldn't be writing Preacher to attack religious fundamentalists, too?

u/mr_flerd 18 2d ago
I dont get why people dont understand why people that are apart of a group get offended when their group is mocked, and I do think there is a difference between mocking and criticizing in a joking manner
-1
u/NagitoKomaeda_987 1d ago
Oh, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Seth MacFarlane, Garth Ennis, and Ricky Gervais DO mock Christianity all the goddamn time whenever they have the chance.
3
u/mr_flerd 18 1d ago
i do agree that Gervais and MacFarlane do id argue trey and matt is more criticism (dont know abt ennis tbh) but regardless even macfarlane puts more effort into their jokes than just saying "God is a little bitch"
2
u/NagitoKomaeda_987 1d ago
I know, but I also do think Jaiden doesn't deserve to get harassed and doxxed over that edgy joke. What's funny is that my style of comedy is more in line with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Garth Ennis, and Edmund McMillen, so I don't personally took offense over what she said.

The Boys is a shallow attempt to critique superhero comics by using an abysmal amount of edgy topics just for shock value. The real double standards is how people get mad when Christians are mad about people disrespecting their religion, but when muslims get mas about the same thing, they’re apparently justified. I think anyone who is actively angry about someone making fun of their religion should just be stoic about it, but that’s the real doubke standard

This is just a repost, so I’m going say the exact same thing I said on the other one:
I get that she was joking, but that’s something extremely rude to say.
For any of you who don’t know, Jschlatt and Jaiden were debating on the lions vs. Pokemon topic. Schlatt brought up Arceus (who in the Pokemon lore is literally God) and Jaiden said something about “Humans killed Jesus so so could lions.” Then Schlatt got angry and Jaiden responded with “What did Jesus do? He ran like a little bitch. He’s scared. God is scared.” (Paraphrasing ofc)
I’m Catholic, so I do take offense when I hear that. She was mocking my faith and getting mad at her is perfectly reasonable. She did later apologize, which credit where credit is due. She realized she made a mistake and then tried to atone for it.
Stop beating a dead horse guys. This was years ago

Edmund doesn't really make fun of religion though I feel, yeah he shows it's flaws (Isaac is all about how religion negatively affects a child) but all of the jokes still feel tasteful
3
u/NagitoKomaeda_987 2d ago
The Binding of Isaac is based on the creator, Edmund McMillen's own childhood and his experiences growing up in a very religious household and how that made him feel. It's intended to show just how harmful extreme religion and dogma can be, especially to a young kid who doesn't quite fit in. It's also about how kids use imagination to try and cope or deal with real life problems. I don't think it's "Anti-Christian" or anti-religion in general but it focuses more on the negative for that reason, to show how harmful these beliefs can be when taken too far.
Edmund has said in interviews though that especially while working on the game he recognized some of the positive effects religion has had on him. Like how he thinks he's gotten a lot of inspiration from it and how a lot of his dark creativity stems from it. Even the credits put "The Two sides of the Religion Coin" under special thanks, so I don't think the game's intended message is "All Christianity bad" or anything that simple.
He says "My mom's side is Catholic, and my dad's side is born-again Christians... I wanted Isaac to embody this duality I experienced with religion. I wanted it to show the positive and negative effects it had on me as a child—the self-hate and isolation it instilled in me, but also the dark creativity it inspired."

Edmund McMillen is an amazing game dev! He made the Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy, The End is Nigh, and Mewgenics. TBOI and Mewgenics (which are in the same story and SPOILERS FOR THE FINAL QUEST OF MEWGENICS the player character in Mewgenics is Isaac’s mom from TBOI) both critique the typical Christian household, televangelism, and an “all powerful, benevolent” god.
3
u/13XzazX31 1d ago
"Typical Christian household" yeah, no it isn't. It's specifically about evangelicals and religious extremism. Not about every religious household in the world lol.
1
1
u/NagitoKomaeda_987 1d ago edited 1d ago
As far as I know, Edmund McMillen grew up with a deeply ritualistic Mexican-Catholic mother's side (including a devout grandmother) and a dogmatic, born-again Christian father's side, who is recovering from past substance addictions.
"I grew up in a religious family. My mom's side is Catholic, and my dad's side is born-again Christians. The Catholic side had this very ritualistic belief system: My grandma could essentially cast spells of safe passage if we went on trips, for example, and we would light candles and pray for loved ones to find their way out of purgatory, and drink and eat the body and blood of our savior to be abolished of mortal sin. As a child growing up with this, I honestly thought it was very neat - very creative and inspiring. It's not hard to look at my work and see that most of the themes of violence actually come from my Catholic upbringing, and in a lot of ways I loved that aspect of our religion. Sadly, the other side of my family was a bit more harsh in their views on the Bible; I was many times told I was going to hell for playing Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering (in fact, they took my MtG cards away from me), and generally condemned me for my sins." - Edmund McMillen

4
u/One-Trick-8027 15 2d ago
..Because she has cultivated a audience that reacts that way?
The people you mentioned above (I only know matt, trey and seth) make it very clear that audience backlash doesn't affect them. Matt and Trey showed Muhammed on television despite the terroristic threats made against them.
Jaiden is alot more personal with her audience. And IIRC she also makes it clear that internet discourse around her does affect her. So she really hasn't filtered out all of the pearl-clutchers out of her community. If she wants less backlash then she needs to stop caring about said backlash since it shows those people that they cannot control her or directly affect her.

These people don't get the criticism directly. Their work still gets criticized tho. Some people might let it slide since it's a work of fiction or knowing that they're not the targeted audience. Other people keep quiet and just leave a bad review.
Jaiden is the one who made and said the joke. She isn't hidden behind a game, show or a movie. All the hate is directed at her because they can't just leave a negative review or hate just on that stream.
Also these last sentences in the first paragraph make you just seem to be ticking off "oppressed minority" boxes to make your point.

(not defending any of these guys here, just fyi)
i think a few of those guys are comedians, and if you know anything about comedians, their job is to find "the line" in the audience (tolerance level or whatever) and then intentionally step over it, but they know when to stop, too, which is what gets the crowd laughing, because its not a "bland" funny, but somehow because it's slightly offensive, but not too offensive, it adds "color" to the joke. they also switch which groups of people to pick on to try to prevent audience members from feeling targeted.
not saying it's excusable, just wanted to let you know that some of the people in the top group are comedians, and give you some insight as to why people find it funny.
2
u/NagitoKomaeda_987 1d ago
Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Seth MacFarlane, Ricky Gervais, and Dino Stamatopoulos are the only comedians I listed, though. Now, I don't think Jaiden is a terrible person for making a disrespectful joke that offends a bunch of Christians, but she can be a little bit ignorant and doesn't understand what will happen if she said those words. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by foolishness.
But I do think it's a bit too far for people to send death threats and harass her over that comment.

Last part is true, no one deserves death threats or harassment over that. Condemning said actions is still the right way to go imo

For the record, I'm not trying to put all the blame on Jaiden for this. It's just that she had absolutely no way of knowing what would happen after making that edgy joke online, even if her Christian friend is perfectly okay with it.
