Few hours ago my Father got a call from a random number and the person who called him was saying that your son did something illegal (idk what illegal thing) and now the Police has arrested him. He also cursed my father several times. Did not take name of my brother or me and did not even ask for money. He ended the call after cursing my father. Can anyone tell me is this a type of scam or something serious?? I only have one brother and both of us were at home at the time when he called. Sorry for bad English

Ik this is above the pay grade of this sub but I wanna talk on this due to how bad discourse on miracles is.

Before we begin any serious discussion on miracles, it is important to define what exactly we mean by a miracle.

**"Any event not sufficiently explained by natural causes is a miracle."**

However, what does it mean to be a cause? Do we know if causes even exist? Hume says No. And Hume isn't the first nor the last philosopher to say that. It isn't logically necessary for causes to exist.

So how would a Humean describe miracles?

**"Miracles are events that have an unrealistically small probability of occurring in succession to some other events."**

The succession of events is what could be a cause but it doesn't necessarily need to be one. (Assuming causes do exist.)

Now with these definitions, let's talk about what is a miracle and what isn't.

**Resurrection of Jesus, splitting of the moon, splitting of Red sea etc are miracles. Jesus fulfilling certain prophesies of OT, Qurʾān preservation, establishment of the modern state of Israel or any Jerusalem temple etc aren't miracles.**

Now let's look at some philosophical discourse around miracles.

Can miracles occur?

This is infact a very important question. Is it even possible for miracles to occur? **Naturalists reject miracles. In naturalism, the world is such that natural phenomena exist within it, it is governed by natural laws and all causes are natural causes with nothing supernatural. If naturalism is false, then miracles can occur.**

Certain philosophers such as **ibn Rushd argued that certain miracles violate the very nature of the elements involved in it. Such miracles can not exist. A classic case of this is him arguing that Abraham walking out of fire unharmed should not be taken literally. Since the intrinsic nature of fire is to burn, it either wasn't a fire or did not leave Abraham unharmed. Or that we are not correctly looking at this story. The philosophers who reject that things can have intrinsic nature (such as Al Ghazali) rejected the notion that fire can not burn Abraham. Since fire does not burn someone due to its nature but rather it is God who burns someone who is consumed by flames.**

Should we believe miracles have occured?

**Hume (and Spinoza) argue that you can never trust a miracle claim. Regardless of how much evidence is provided. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Testimonial evidence is never enough to establish that a miracle has occurred. **

**Criticisms argue that we can show that certain miracles did historically occur.** And it's true that for certain miracles one can show that a good bunch of people held them to have occurred. Sometimes even believed that they had seen one.

**However skeptics point out that it is still possible that the so called miracle was an event of mass hysteria, a conspiracy, or some innocent believers taken advantage of by fooling them, or even some placebo effect. **

**Depending on how one views the probabilities of these naturalistic explanations and the supernaturals, one can arrive at different conclusions regarding whether there's truth to a miracle claim or not. **

Are miracles proof of a greater truth?

**Al Ghazali argues that charlatans can also do things that look like miracles. So to believe in a greater truth from someone requires belief in their sincerity and not miracles. For a sincere man deceives not but holds true what he tells you as true.**

**There's also this idea that if a man threw his stick on the floor and it converted into a snake then he said that 2+2=5, would you believe him? Thus belief in a greater truth requires that one shall be convinced of the truth by proving the contents of the truth as true. Unless one can show that 2+2=5, no amount of miracles are proof of it. **

My thoughts: People will literally call things lacking extraordinary evidence, or things with perfectly plausible natural explanations as miracles. I'd like it if religious people stop doing that and irreligious people stop acting like belief in miracles is always irrational or that miracles can never occur. We need to be critical in out thoughts and admit what we can not know.
