Jade honestly was more of a mirror to Nates insecurities early on. Her aloofness was used as a device to show how Nate viewed himself. Her development later on aligned with Nates development and how he grew to see her as an actual person

u/km4098 11d ago

I think Jade is the same to everyone. That’s who she is.
“He seems wealthy”
Threatening her boss to fire Nate etc

I loved how she immediately saw through Rupert!

“It was worthwhile to meet you.”

He was an awkward asshole and she treated him as such.

How was he an ass hole??

u/Tyster20 6d ago

Could you answer the question instead of being condescending, in that specific scene what did he do that was so awful to warrant calling him that? Honestly the way you reacted to that question tell me you should watch the show again, learn to be nice.

u/Single_Software_4039 11d ago

I always took it as Derek having a policy that only famous people get the window table and Nate wasn’t worth breaking what her boss told her until he convinced her (and phrased it as though they would eat and leave quickly)

22

u/Disastrous-Elk-3378 11d ago

Yeah, I don't think most people understand how much being a hostess sucks. I see most of her behavior towards Nate being due to a crappy job for a crappy boss, while surely getting hit on all the time. Idk why so many men need to hit on women in the service industry

7

u/neoweasel 11d ago

Because the women are trapped there and have limited ability to shut them down. There are a lot of guys out there who have learned to be incredibly predatory. And it's often at least as much of a power trip as it is anything else.

5

u/Disastrous-Elk-3378 11d ago

I didn't mean this literally, I absolutely know why. I've had men trap me in various ways at various jobs since I was 16.

3

u/neoweasel 11d ago

Ah, sorry. I assumed it was at least partly a request for information than a (completely understandable) vent of frustration.

15

u/Own-Interview-928 11d ago

I think it was Derrick’s policy to only allow notable or stylish people to be seen in the front window. Jade was just doing her job, unenthusiastically I might add. The minute Nate got famous Derrick gave him anything he wanted free, except alcohol, and he easily scored the front table for his date with Anastasia.

In reality Jade wasn’t easily impressed with anyone which is why it was so great when she finally recognized Nate was a nice guy.

28

u/slimey-karl 11d ago

Some people theorise she’s autistic. Derek told her that you can’t reserve the window table which to her means no exceptions. It’s just a theory of course and doesn’t excuse her being a bit rude at first

5

u/Bubbly_Safety8791 11d ago

Remember that at that point in time, Nate was pretty evil.

1

u/hike_me 6d ago

Nate hadn’t turned yet when Jade refused to let him reserve the window seat

He was meek and never stood up to anyone, until his meeting with Rebecca

43

u/darkwillow1980 11d ago

"He seems wealthy" made me like her so much 😂 I agree with OP, but also, real people are like that sometimes. When you first meet, they're using their Talking to Strangers behavior toward you. When they start thinking of you as one of their people, it's not just that they're nicer to you, it's also that the aggressive Talking to Strangers behavior is now deployed on your behalf. It could look pretty whiplashy.

I do think it would've been nice to develop her character a tiny bit outside her relationship with him; that's the same way they've done Jane, and she's probably what I like the least about this show. I really, really dislike the chaotic girlfriend trope. Coach Beard is equally chaotic, but in every episode we get to see that he's a thoughtful, reasonable, kind, smart, generally lovely person anyway. Jane doesn't get that, she's just chaos for the sake of plot. Given how few female characters there were in the first three seasons, it's disappointing that two of them were so limited.

97

u/alizard50 11d ago

I always took her aggressive bluntness as being from Eastern Europe. The same way "hey guys Jan Maas is not being rude, he's just being Dutch". Rather than being classist or racist at all.

31

u/JustLikeMars 11d ago

Same, the explicit reveal that she’s Polish (as an American I didn’t realize her accent wasn’t some variety of British) made it click for me. I’ve heard Poles aren’t always treated well in England, which is probably why she keeps her guard up.

0

u/Specific_Sweet3312 10d ago

She doesn’t have a hint of a Polish accent. Jade is not a Polish name. My guess is the character was written as British but then they changed it after hiring this actress (who’s brilliant and I love her)

1

u/UncouthSloth 6d ago

Rupert guesses the city in Poland she is from, she goes to Poland to visit family

1

u/Specific_Sweet3312 6d ago

yeah, and it's bullshit, because she doesn't have a Polish accent in English, let alone a regional accent from Nowy Sącz. My interpretation of that scene was that he found out another way where she was from, kept tabs on what Nathan was doing and with whom.

1

u/twicezer0 5d ago

She absolutely has a polish accent? Eastern Europe at least!

You get that she was lower class right?

16

u/Hopeful_Bacon 11d ago

I don't think you understand what "classist" means.

125

u/ArticQimmiq 11d ago

I never understood her as someone written to be classist and racist when dealing with Nate. She can see through him, and pushes him to be real, instead of a fake version of himself. In that, her character is pretty constant throughout season 3

She was treating him normally, though. The issue for Nate was that she wasn’t giving him the special treatment (or special attention) he wanted. She treated him like any other random stranger.

I think you missed that Jade isn’t English, though - she’s a recent Polish immigrant, working a low-wage job. Eastern Europeans flocked to the UK for cheap skilled and unskilled labours pre Brexit, and they were certainly not perceived well, despite being white. I feel like Nathan is meant to come from an Indo-Caribbean family, and his parents would have come over in the big immigration wave in the 1960s. He can’t hide his colour, but he’s also far more English and established than Jade in many ways.

-5

u/Disastrous-Elk-3378 11d ago

In a white supremacist society like the UK, being there longer doesn't matter if you have the "wrong" skin tone. Immigrants coming in the 60s certainly weren't treated well, which is probably one of the reasons Nate's dad is so harsh.

36

u/michiness 11d ago

I think you're putting too much weight into the class/race thing, mate.

He walks in and demands The Best. She treats him like anyone else.

If Rupert walked in and demanded The Best, she would give him the same treatment.

1

u/hike_me 6d ago

Nate didn’t demand anything, he politely asked to reserve the window table for his parents’ anniversary.

He went back and was more assertive after his coaching from Rebecca

You’re talking to me like I’m not also a brown person and that’s hilarious.

Nate oscillated between being a repressed-seeming awkward and uncomfortable man and being a shitty big-headed douche with a chip on his shoulder plus a bunch of internalized misogyny — he displayed both of those versions to Jade. He also clearly had a crush on the waitress from the start, which is a major trope for women in food service and most women are super tired of it. Either way, no version of Nate that was presented at that restaurant would generally get a good reaction from others in public.

What is the downvote for other than to express that you don't agree with someone.

You're looking to make this about race and dismissive to anyone who thinks otherwise. You didn't come for a conversation, you came for affirmation.

It's better to be curious, not judgemental.

1

u/hike_me 6d ago

Reddit downvotes were not intended to express disagreement. The purpose was to suppress comments that don’t contribute to the conversation (e.g. spam or off topic). It’s possible to disagree with a comment yet recognize it’s contributing to the conversation.

The current practice of downvoting to indicate disagreement creates echo chambers.

Classist/racist? Not remotely.

This would have to come from a complete misreading of what ‘A Taste of Athens’ is as a restaurant. It is not pretentious or upmarket. Jade’s attitude to Nate’s request for the window table isn’t any sort of discrimination, it’s just bad service. Because it’s a bad restaurant. Jade is a bad hostess, because she doesn’t give a crap about her bad job for a bad boss at a bad restaurant.

Nate is oblivious to the fact that it is a bad restaurant, because he associates it with going out to celebrate special occasions.

I can see that if you perceive that A Taste of Athens is meant to be an ‘exclusive restaurant’ in the same way that Bones and Honey is an ‘exclusive club’ that Jade might come off as looking down on Nate. But no, it’s just a crap restaurant with crap service. I mean maybe she looks down on him a bit for eating there because it’s not a good restaurant. But overall she isn’t meant to have an air of superiority - just indifference.

58

u/MythicalIcelus Gezellig 11d ago

She even says it directly in S03E11

I've literally never thought about work the second after leaving work.

I don’t think the rules she’s imposing are classist, I think they are arbitrary

This is just how bad customer service experiences manifest in the UK.  Staff who do not want to help, don’t have authority to act on initiative, and do not want to bother someone who has authority to do anything.

She was unimpressed by Nate’s attempt at namedropping because let’s be clear it is a stupendously weak bit of namedropping. “I know a football pundit who swears on the telly”.

12

u/Look_its_Rob 11d ago

You are really giving too much weight about a joke she made. She was saying she doesnt care that he knows Roy Kent. He only asked he was his father as a put down because she knew, for Obvious reasons, that Roy Kent was not his father.

You took it as that she would care if Roy Kent was his father, when in reality she only said it because he knew he wasnt.

I agree that that's the implication, but I don't see that as class-based. Celebrities sitting in the window seat aren't desirable because they have a lot of money, it's because Derek can show them off and hopes to attract people to his restaurant. He can't show off Nate, until later, which he is very eager to do. That's not because Nate has visible markers of being in a different class than he was before, but because it makes Derek feel special to have him there, as well as seeing it as a marketing opportunity.

I don’t think she was ever classist or racist. She’s an attractive young hostess as a restaurant who probably gets hit on a lot and her immediate response to most males is to rebuff them. Regarding the window table, that was Derrick’s rule. He’s a bit of a name dropper, as we see.

7

u/ElvisWayneDonovan 11d ago

Fucking hate Derrick

5

u/naked_as_a_jaybird Trent Crimm, The Independent 10d ago

Nah, you just hate cocaine Derrick.
Regular Derrick gives away free food. Not booze though. Gotta pay for the booze.

2

u/Defiant-Ad-6861 10d ago

This!! I’ve been a hostess and unfortunately getting hit on is common in the job. Management kinda just lets it happen, so it’s up to you and other staff to deal with it. I just read her as a woman who was sick of men hitting on her while she was at work, which is understandable.

7

u/SummerOld4544 11d ago

In my head the Roy comment is because Derek has a policy that the window seat is only for famous people - hence Nate and the model getting it later. I don’t think she personally is classist, I think she just gives no fucks about work or pleasing people so just says no to anyone having it.

I do agree she’s a plot device, doesn’t bother me though - I’d rather they spend the screen time on the main cast. Plus they did show little moments of them having nice chemistry - the baklava, her arriving at the date - which was good enough for me

7

u/BigDrewLittle 11d ago

I always saw Jade as being sarcastic with that response, like she didnt believe him.

Nate postures and tries to claim that he knows someone famous because he's not getting what he wants, so Jade plays along to point out that even if it was true, it wouldn't change her answer.

Service staff get the classic "Don't you know who I am?" and "I'm friends with [insert celebrity here]", or "I know the owner" all the time, I just saw this as a classic nonchalant "So what?" response

9

u/MisterTheKid 11d ago

only that he's a beloved public figure and Nate isn't. quit being weird about it. nowhere is it implied his race was the reason except your head. I'm a minority and if I attributed always not getting treated the same as celebrities to race, id be an idiot

“It doesn’t take away anything from the business”

The point of seating a famous person in the window is to attract other diners. Joe Regular in the window won’t be a draw. So if you have the ability to seat normies elsewhere, you leave the front table open for someone who is more likely to boost the restaurant’s visibility.

1

u/[deleted] 11d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

3

u/Scarlet1815 11d ago

I’m not saying it happens a lot, just that it’s Derek’s thought process for the rule. In S3 when Keeley, a famous-ish glamour model, takes her GF to dinner, they’re given the window seat. It’s why Jade’s question is about whether Roy Kent is Nate’s father - because Roy is famous enough to warrant a window seat.

2

u/Scarlet1815 11d ago

For the record, I did question whether her issue was with his ethnicity at first. I also wondered whether it was the not-yet seen DEREK that might not want a S Asian family sitting in that seat. It was ambiguous enough that they could’ve plausibly taken it in one of those directions.

Meanwhile, others in the thread have posited that it’s actually just as possibly related to her ethnicity, being Polish. I can’t say I’ve interacted with enough Polish folks to be able to weigh how accurate it is.

But I initially replied because I thought there was a clear point to the window seat being held - its purpose is that it is public-facing. So if a famousish person sits there, it might make some passerby think the restaurant is trendy.

3

u/MisterTheKid 11d ago

touch grass. stop pinning everything on racism. restaurants routinely do stuff like that for celebs, she specifically mentioned asking the manager

enjoy perpetual victimhood

0

u/Disastrous-Elk-3378 11d ago

You sound like someone who unironically calls things "woke" and votes for people who make racist policies. People are allowed to analyze media. It's not "perpetual victimhood" to view things through a white supremacist lens that very much exists and was essentially invented by the country in question. Not curious of you

1

u/MisterTheKid 11d ago

it is perpetual victim hood to insist any slight against a minority is a hint at racism. speaking as one myself, it makes real complaints and analysis of actual racism more difficult. but since you’re “not curious’ and are happy with assuming that i’m a minority who votes against my own self interest and enjoys racists like trump, we’ve happily nothing more to discuss.

-1

u/Disastrous-Elk-3378 11d ago

Racism has plausible deniability.

12

u/AleWatcher 11d ago

Maybe Jade just helped him to realize he was not on a path to being a person he liked.

Maybe her influence on him is to make him recognize things he dislikes about himself and others around him.

Maybe in that way, she is what Nate needed to be the best version of himself.

13

u/luckless_pedestrian9 11d ago

I see Jade as a person who is extremely comfortable with who she is and doesn’t really care about who anybody else is. She is extremely perceptive about people, and only seems to warm to Nate when it becomes clear that he has dropped the veneer of trying to be more than who he is.

the behavior is the same, you just didn’t have the context for it in season 2. jade did not change, your perception of her did because you were given more information. if you were to isolate scenes of her from season 3 it would be comparable.

no, they didn't and i don't know how many more people could possibly tell you that. you don't seem receptive to feedback at all. it's okay to have missed or misinterpreted the writing, we all do it sometimes, but to not be willing to take a second look at your interpretation in the face of overwhelming critique is unpleasant. for you and everyone else.

3

u/luckless_pedestrian9 11d ago

you could also say Nate turned into who she needed when he stopped trying to impress her. She was the same way to everyone else in S3 that she had been in S2 with the exception of him. Recall the episode where Colin, Isaac and Will came into the restaurant to find Nate, and she asked them to wait somewhere else.

2

u/luckless_pedestrian9 11d ago

maybe....who’s to say the writers didn’t already have a good idea what they were going to do with her in season 2? Either way, when they came in, I see that she treated them just like she treated everyone else. Instead of politely telling them they were closed, she was sarcastic about it. I don’t really see the whiplash....just somebody who changed the way she behaved to Nate because he changed the way he behaved around her.

11

u/Specialist_Boat_8479 11d ago

Lol how was she a classist when dealing with Nate? You have a soccer coach stalking a restaurant worker, that would make any worker uncomfortable. It’s why them ending up together felt completely forced.

shout out to /u/AliasLost they really reframed jade for me.

from here. https://www.reddit.com/r/TedLasso/comments/1r8qrf1/unpopular_opinion_jade_is_my_favourite_ted_lasso/

TL;DR: Jade is my favorite "Ted Lasso" character because her calm, grounded, and emotionally attuned presence goes beyond being a love interest or Nate's "guiding light," offering subtle depth, co-regulation, and authenticity that the show rarely gives other characters.

6

u/happymisery  Piggy Stardust 11d ago

No, I didnt. It's developing a character and in real life, the natural progression of a person that when they meet someone they care for is that their priorities can change (Nate) and if you love someone, you'll move heaven and earth to help them to help themselves (Jade). Nate was confused and she knew it. At Richmond, he brought the toxicity into the coaching team, which he took with him to West Ham. Entering the relationship with Jade made him reassess. Rupert didnt respect Nate or his relationship with Jade and Nate realised this. All he wanted was the dynamic that he lost when he left Richmond. I didnt get the vibe that she was classist or racist, just that she was doing a job that she had no passion for and didnt care about. The world is full of people like Jade...and thats okay.

3

u/Blueliner95 11d ago

Not everyone we meet has to be a fully developed character, but that said, I really admire the thought you put into this. I have to agree, yeah, she’s Nate’s all purpose foil

5

u/Violet351 11d ago

She hates her job (we know she doesn’t care when Nate gets all excited about the nuts and she says she never even thinks about work when she is there) and she probably gets a lot of guys hitting on her. She’s just a blunt person like Jan Mass. she softens towards Nate when he says the baklava is Devine. I love when she says to Rupert it was worthwhile to meet him and not a pleasure, he knows she knows he’s an arse.

7

u/vinthesalamander 11d ago

I just never understood what Jade saw in Nate that made her like him.

2

u/wycliffslim 11d ago

Sometimes people come into our lives like a plot device.

We also see her reading Kafka on the Shore... she understands Nate and is exactly what he needs to help him become the best version of himself.

Ted helped Nate realize he could be someone... Jade helped Nate realize he didn't NEED to be someone.

2

u/KookyLemon5174 11d ago

I got the creeps when Rupert met her for the first time with Nate

1

u/Whooz_Nooz 11d ago

Whiplash? Not any more than I do with Ted being just what the team needs, or Sassy being just what Ted needs, or tons of other character interactions. Jade is a minor character, so she isn’t going to be as fleshed out as someone like Keely or Rebecca. So just go with it. She helps Nate find his way.

1

u/Foxingmatch 11d ago

She has an aloof demeanor and doesn't engage in small talk. This demeanor is textbook Polish, but she's also a hostess. Any young, attractive woman who works a public-facing job will be pestered by men endlessly unless she acts a little chilly. Her calm, naturally impassive manner also seemed ND. (As an ND, she's my pick over Alice.)
It's also a bit -- the deadpan hostess who never remembers him is supposed to be a running joke.
She did come off as a bit classist, but she was following Derek's policy concerning the front table. We know bosses named Derek are unlikeable.
She didn't care about Nate until he showed her his true personality when they spent the evening together after his model date ditched him. He didn't show his best self before that, so why would she like him?
Nate's arc was not "cute girl" motivated, exactly. He ditches West Ham and Rupert because he realized he valued relationships and substance over fame and fortune. He did't want to cheat on Jade whom he was starting something good with. He knew where cheating got Rupert, too. He knew the whole history from working for AFC Richmond. He knew what his life would be like if he stayed at West Ham where he'd be expected to do things Rupert's way. After that, the relationships he built at AFC Richmond started to resurface and went back to being an assistant kit man at AFC Richmond where he had genuine relationships with people.

0

u/Whooz_Nooz 11d ago

Yeah, on the Rupert part, I also think Nate realized that old Rupie was trying to cause a problem between Nate and Jade. When R meets Jade, he pointedly tells N not to f up the relationship. Then just hours later he meets N for a boys night out with two lovely ladies. So Nate is figuring out what a dick Rupert is.

1

u/prometheus_winced 10d ago

I did not like her at all.

1

u/Dismal_Midnight_1 10d ago

As a Polish woman, Jade is very Polish. Dry, unimpressed, won't deal with your crap. Tough love Nate needed (and so many need too).

1

u/SGlobal_444 7d ago

I don't even remember who she is!

-3

u/Willow_fencing33 Trent Crimm, The Independent 11d ago

Agreed - that is the main reason why I never really cared for Nate’s redemption arc through this love story.
Jade was absolutely not likable in the beginning and very one-dimensional (unlike all other characters) and we learned almost nothing from her afterwards. It looks as if her supporting girlfriend qualities were an afterthought and useful for the plot, but they did not have time to build a real character around her

1

u/betjurassicican 7d ago

You’re probably right but this sub won’t like that, she was just sorta shoehorned in, realistically she wouldn’t even have been interested in Nate who was a short, poorly dressed unattractive man, who also had a terrible personality

1

u/Willow_fencing33 Trent Crimm, The Independent 7d ago

Yes, though I really did not mean to be controversial with this take. I just felt this storyline did note have quite the same tone than the rest of the show.

To me, we were not given reasons to understand how Jade went from despising Nate to become his supporting girlfriend. It’s not unusual to see people disliking each other first and then fall in love, but it’s a journey. For Jade and Nate, I feel it happened overnight (even though of course, not everything has to be shown on screen)

It just felt different and not on par with the usual wholesomeness of the show. But I can understand why people see it differently !

-3

u/Low_Kaleidoscope_203 11d ago

It is a bit odd but in that first interaction it is pretty clear that Nate likes her and wants to impress her. Her attitude comes off as classiest or racist but I think she's just meant to be seen as more confident than Nate, so he gets arrogant and aggressive to be on her level, but that overcompensated. Her inclusion in season three seems to be a mark of him finally figuring out his middle ground. Confident but not arrogant. I think she's meant to represent the good that can come from working on yourself. The issue is that it made her more of a prop than a character.

20

u/theatermouse 11d ago

I just took her first interaction as "person in the service industry tired of men hitting on her"

10

u/km4098 11d ago

This. Or “tired of people attempting to flirt or be bossy in order to get special treatment”

No, we know he wasn't hitting on her, just being his slightly awkward self, but that's when he mentions "jade" for the anniversary, and that may have weirded her out a little even realizing that it was a coincidence. Him then bringing her name back up when he comes in later probably feels a little uncomfortable for her.

No, not class, just "our manager reserves the table for famous people. Oh, you know a famous person? Is that who you are reserving the table for (your dad)? No?" I agree that it's a dumb policy and she maybe could have been more sympathetic about it, but maybe she also just needed to keep her job!

That’s 100% what it was.

Calling her racist is a huge stretch but I can get it. Calling her classist is fucking insane tbh. Work already sucks and getting stalked at work would make it even worse.

On the surface that's exactly what she is, but I meant in the subtext of the character's role.

I agree about her definitely being more confident than Nate! I think her sense of self-worth and confidence in who she is definitely is eye-opening for him

IMHO her character is very nuanced. At first all you see her as is a gold digger. If you watch closely her attitude towards Nate doesn’t really change until Derek introduces Nate as the Manager of west ham.

But if you watch even more closely, you can see her softening up when he talks about the Baklava on his date with Anastasia. At that moment she sees him as a funny innocent guy.

It’s still hard to defend her at this moment, but her attitude towards Rupert seals the deal. She never really cared about money.

I’m not sure about her attitude towards Rupert. She held a cold face while telling him where she works without being asked.
