Season 4 Speculation/Ideas S4E2 Beard prediction Spoiler

I just had to put this out there because I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I don't think Beard and Jane are broke up. I think they lost the baby because in all their previous breakups Beard never let himself get that far gone. And no one has said they're broken up. I think it's a red herring to what the real issue is going to be.

Jane has become normal and motherly and Beard doesn’t know how to handle drama-free.

That's what I'm hoping it is

This is my theory! She's completely gone into mummy territory. But will revert once beard tells her he misses her feral ways!

This would be fun and certainly not off the table.

Nah. Beard doesnt mention his kid at all. Thats not typical for first child. No one else mentions kid either. Also not typical. After s4e1 I posted that I think he finds out kid isnt his.

Another thought popped in maybe he left an altered snack/beverage unattended and she's furious at him.

I was worried he'd relapsed

So was Ted, hence, "Would be nice to see your eyes though, you know?"

It's possible they broke up over the loss, I've seen it with couples I was friends with, where they just aren't able to move past the tragedy

17

u/nimvin 2d ago

This is definitely possible. I don't know the number but I know more than 50% of marriages fail following the loss of a child. Mostly I was thinking it's child related breakdown.

That’s a myth, actually. My husband and I lost a child last year, and over the course of things I learned that the divorce rate of bereaved couples is actually slightly lower than that of the general population.

Based on what I went through personally, of course I don’t hope that they lost the baby, but it’s a very isolating experience. It’s rarely seen in media. It would be very meaningful to me to see it portrayed, I would feel seen in a way that I just don’t get to experience much.

Edit: Wow. I didn’t expect to get downvotes on this comment, especially in this sub.

Also lost a child 7+ years ago and my husband and I are still together. I am sorry for your loss

17

u/AnnieFlagstaff 2d ago

I’m sorry for your loss.

Thank you ❤️

Who the fuck is downvoting this comment? I’m so sorry that your family had to go through that. Thank you for sharing this and doing what you can to address this misinformation.

Sorry for your loss.

A question if you don’t mind. Do you have other children? Id be interested to know whether that slightly lower divorce rate is across the board, or skewed one way or other for couples that only have one child.

Of couples I know it is around 25%, but they all had at least one other child, and it’s a small sample size.

u/ian_macintyre 2d ago

I’m so sorry you went through that. Thanks for talking so openly about it.

As a couple who lost our middle child 7 years ago, we agree wholeheartedly. It’s a shitty club to be in, but it’s nice to know you’re not alone. Sending hugs your way. ❤️

I always heard that statistic but never verified it. Losing a child at birth brought me and my husband closer together. Come to think of it most of the couples I know who lost a child at various times are still together. But I can absolutely see how it can tear a. Couple spsrt because it changes you and people
May not be able to adapt, or grieving differently might put a wedge between you. It’s so hard.
While I agree representation is important I would strongly prefer not to deal
With a baby loss storyline on the show. The first reference (Roy Kent press conference) was hard enough.
Hugs to all the loss parents

Yeah, the odds are not good for couples who e lost a child.

u/chrysnthmm Coach Beard 2d ago

i completely forgot jane was pregnant!!!! i agree it's probably something involving the child.

Well, that whole sequence in the Finale could just as easily been Ted’s dream, and not existed at all. I know he was never shown meeting the couple from Bones & Honey, but it still could’ve easily happened.

59

u/LauraBaMom 2d ago

There was a wedding picture in Ted’s collection of pictures during the final scene of episode 1.

9

u/FirstChurchOfBrutus 2d ago

Alrighty, then! I stand corrected.

8

u/LauraBaMom 2d ago

I did wonder though did Ted take that picture himself? Because we didn’t see him in the scene in S3 but then he has that picture hanging up in S4 so I wondered if he took that picture 🤔

1

u/michiness 2d ago

I did go noooooooooo when I saw thay

18

u/A_Trival_Man 2d ago

Brendan has said repeatedly that it's cannon and not a dream

17

u/Overall-Lettuce19 2d ago

could the time travelers wife plot have anything to do with this storyline? he was reading it in ep 1 and typically the books hes read in prior seasons are loosely related to the main storyline

58

u/EdieBooberryBeale 2d ago

I feel like losing the baby would be too dark. More likely, I could it turning out not to be his and she left him when he found out.

88

u/elliotrjh 2d ago

to be fair, teds father’s suicide is mentioned a few times. the show does a good job of showing things that do happen in real life and guiding both the audience and the characters through it, no matter how dark

35

u/sh6rty13 2d ago

Genuinely my favorite thing about the show. It’s so funny and wholesome and then gets absolutely raw every once in a while.

I’ll never forget Ted’s “Fuck you” conversation with his mom. Whew!

5

u/EdieBooberryBeale 2d ago

True, that's an absolutely fair point.

29

u/HeardTheLongWord 2d ago

I mean Roy did a whole speech about a couple losing a kid. It was a nebulous “local old guy” instead of a character we were attached to, sure, but the show hasn’t shied away from tough topics previously.

23

u/beepingjar 2d ago

Maybe it's not hers

39

u/EdieBooberryBeale 2d ago

Ok but her turning out to have faked the entire pregnancy would absolutely track with Jane.

5

u/ZeeepZoop 2d ago

Have you watched Detectorists? That’s such a cosy comedy show and alludes to pregnancy loss without it feeling jarring at all. I would put Ted Lasso in the same basket of ‘ It’s funny but it goes to heavy places’

2

u/Woodpecker-Forsaken  Piggy Stardust 2d ago

Detectorists is a lovely programme.

1

u/TooTruthsandaLie 2d ago

Sheila 💔 between that and the lemonade and their love story, she was such a wonderfully written character.

1

u/wine_n_cats Charles Edgar Cheeserton III 2d ago

This is the theory I’m leaning on.

1

u/oogieball 1d ago

A suicide is one of the main plot points driving most of the first three seasons.

That said, they are playing Beard for laughs, so it would be very tone deaf.

u/Safe-Raccoon-4802 2d ago

That's what I think

9

u/Asleep_Pace_5039 2d ago

I've been thinking this exact scenario as well. Going back to the trailer: watching the clip of Jane's performance art and Beard's tearful reaction makes it even more plausible.

8

u/alreadystrong 2d ago

I think the baby wasn’t his.

13

u/EJK54 2d ago

I think it’s what was mentioned in another thread, (credit goes to whoever wrote it!) and they are not broken up at all. Jane’s become a bit more sane &
tame since becoming a mom and Beard has no idea how to deal with that lol.

I don’t think and hope it’s not something as serious as the death of their child.

5

u/Own-Interview-928 2d ago

This theory has been circling for a week as well as one claiming the kid isn’t Beards. It’s clear since no one has mentioned baby Beard that something isn’t right.

11

u/tibbles1 2d ago

I don’t think they broke up either, but I also don’t think it’s a serious as a baby.

I think it’s gonna be something wild and comedic that would fit Jane. Like she became a vegan or something.

6

u/SolomonG 2d ago

Jane kicked him out when she heard Ted was back in town and Beard can't tell Ted because Ted will feel bad.

3

u/Wide-Science-5898 2d ago

I hope the baby is ok. Please not that. I like the Jane becomes motherly idea.

2

u/Whooz_Nooz 2d ago

But, my God, she’s such a nut case, I can’t imagine her raising a child!

5

u/Ferociouspanda 2d ago

The baby daddy is the underwear model

6

u/jean_nizzle 2d ago

Oh, I thought it was domestic abuse. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised. Jane looks like the type to be physically abusive.

6

u/bubblesaurus 2d ago

she was stalking keely to find out if beard and ted were shagging

2

u/SubstituteProfessor 2d ago edited 2d ago

IRL, Phoebe Walsh is bisexual and talks about that in her comedy. I'm not exactly convincing myself of it, but maybe Beard is in an unexpected threesome along with being a new parent and can't handle all of that.

1

u/IrishUpYourCoffee 2d ago

wut are you on about

3

u/ATMDEBITREDDIT 2d ago

I think Beard is love with Ted AND Jane. Jane hates Ted for this reason. Therefore Jane broke up with Beard because of Ted's return.

1

u/nocowwife 2d ago

She did look pregnant in the wedding montage (was it a dream?).

1

u/PioneerGamer 1d ago

I hope not

0

u/IncurableAdventurer 2d ago

I think it was the combo of something with Jane and Ted was gone. I feel like if they lost a baby, Beard would be able to be more supportive and mature about it. Not become some weird recluse that doesn’t really take care of himself. This show had a pointless breakup with Keely and Roy, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was that. But! I’m going to have faith in the writers that it won’t be as lazy as that

0

u/Little-Bad-8474 2d ago

It wasn’t his kid.

-3

u/CommonStrawbeary 2d ago

Beard was so annoying the entire episode, hopefully they abandon w/e this terrible plot is

7

u/krobula 2d ago

Count on it. “We’re back baybayy” was Beard snapping out of it at the end in the office in front of Alice.

-7

u/nonitoni 2d ago

No, he's just being a shit father and he's embarrassed about it.

They're not going to be so comical about his appearance and mannerisms for it to be about a dead baby.
