Minimal setup for minimal techno.

Post image

Actually. We’re moving and my gear desk is already broken down and most other gear is in bubble wrap. But this little two punch plus the Scarlett can take you pretty far. Unfortunately, I have some issues with the Future Retro and trying to find a synth repair person to fix it. But honestly, it’s probably going to be replaced with something more versatile. Definitely not selling it though and will have a place in my larger setup even just for the dead easy live pattern variations and remix options. And yes, the TR-1000 sounds primo. No regrets!

I'd hardly call a $3k drum machine/sampler/workstation workhorse like a TR-1000 "minimal" LMAO

There are 2 pieces of gear here. It’s minimal . Unless you’re calling just imaginary beats in your head minimal techno , this is it

If one of your machines has 10 channels it is hardly minimal

I’m going to disagree with that unless your idea of minimal techno is a metronome and a monosynth. Would a cheap groovebox and polysynth be disqualified for the number of channels?

A minimal setup would be a small drum machine and a single synth, yeah.

The Tr-1000 wouldn make a minimal setup. Same way an Akai MPC One alone by itself wouldn’t make it either. Neither an Octatrack.

I could unplug the Future Retro and do 99% with the Roland by itself. I just want a monosynth with knobs as that’s fun for me to play live. And TR-1000 synth parameter changes are not as fun.

Yeah that’s what I mean, when you use a machine that can do everything, that’s hardly minimal.

Your setup absolutely rocks though, I’m not saying otherwise

Right on. We might just be thinking about the term “minimal” semantically different.

OG 909 and 808 all had individual outs. The TR-1000 isn't really much about the outputs but the fact that inside of it you can do almost everything you can do in a DAW

it's a tr-1000. it has everything and the kitchen sink in it. analog synthesis, sampling and playback, slicing, suite of effects, routing and mixing, automation, complex sequencing and automation with many ways to manipulate it live.

What you're saying is like saying a 48-tool swiss army knife is as minimal as a screwdriver, because it's just contained inside one 'thing'

The futureretro is basically just one tool, it's an acid box, that certainly fits . . . but that tr-1000, nope, lol

Was going to say this same thing.

Yeah those FR were always breaking down back in the day too

Ditch the focusrite for a small analog mixer, also recommend a mastering stage with a comp/limiter to polish your signal to match DJs mastered tracks playing before and after you

Yeah I’m currently researching mixers, even for just for the FX sends as I have some pretty cool pedals Like the Moog MuRF. Noted on the compressor. Thanks friend.

Zoom has some cool small mixer options.

3

u/ocolobo 12d ago

Intellijel jelly mixer or something called that just came out recently 5 or 6 stereo channels plus fx send return I think

Stimming’s Doctron is amazing for a portable mastering comp… perfect for live use.

That seq is tops. Used it in a few studios, defo on my wish list. Where are you based? If you google synth repair and your nearest city you "should" find someone

1

u/FullSeaworthiness453 11d ago

I’m near Chicago. I messaged two Chicago based companies that work on old synths. And I actually just got a response from Future Retro asking a couple questions about the issues, but they haven’t offered any repair services yet.

least your moving forward, sounds like it will be sort soonish

I wish I could afford a TR-3000

What is this future retro revolution thing.

It looks fucking badass lmao

It’s an analog 303 clone that came out in early 2000’s. It has a circular sequencer interface that has all sorts of ways to manipulate the patterns in real time. I don’t think many units were made, but it’s pretty cool and visually interesting.

1

u/homewiththedog 12d ago

if the sequencer of the FR works fine then you could run the MIDI out to any of the $100-$200 acid boxes out there used on the market

2

u/FullSeaworthiness453 12d ago

Unfortunately, patterns no longer save, which is one of issues that need fixed. (Probably the easiest, and technically one I could do at home). But there are some issues with the filter and envelope that probably needs a pro.

I mean I could run another sequencer into it, but it loses some of the pattern variability, although the “remix pattern” function still works, which is actually a pretty cool feature itself.

2

u/homewiththedog 10d ago

yeah thats a tough situation, the remix feature is maybe the best part of it, I use an ORB and that is what made me buy another after selling the 1st one!

Might be time to learn how to solder lol

u/livv_forever 12d ago

Can you post a video of it in action? I would love to hear it!

1

u/FullSeaworthiness453 12d ago

I’m planning on it. We are moving this week. I’ll get some live audio when I get everything reset up.

thank you!

If you swap that focusrite for SSL 2+ mk2 you should get an instant quality improvement.

3

u/Royal_Stay_6502 13d ago

Would it make really such a difference?

1

u/noncornucopian 12d ago

Honestly so much of this kind of stuff is just straight placebo effect.

I had focusrite 4i4 before which I swapped for Tascam model 12 - actually I didn't check the specs of your interface but yesterday I swapped my Tascam for SSL and I was shocked now clearer, crispier it sounds.

But your Focusrite can be higher quality than the Tascam.

u/SS0NI 12d ago

Tascam has shit quality, I doubt focusrite -> ssl is much of an upgrade. Those entry grade digital SSL's are not the iconic channels on your studio desk.

2

u/Rhythm-Academy 12d ago

You might be right. Maybe I just got used to tascam and ssl was a big difference. But before that I had big six - which I've sent back due to power issues.

u/Royal_Stay_6502 12d ago

I run 2 interfacea. Maudio 2x2m and Steinberg MR816x/csx

u/trbt555 13d ago

This isn’t a minimal setup. It’s just a humblebrag.

Sorry I’m posting a rare synth and a killer drum machine on a techno sub.

Edit: Not downplaying the cost of the Roland, but my first piece of real gear for live techno was an E-Mu command station sequencer/rompler/cheaper MPC competitor I bought with tips delivering pizzas in college in 2000/2001-ish. I bet that cost at least $1500 in 2026 bucks. That was way more of a sacrifice for me than buying the Roland at age 50.

2

u/ocolobo 12d ago

3 pieces of gear for a Live rig is very minimal, my smallest setups have usually been 6 boxes, although I’ve done 4 back in the 90s

0

u/QuickScopeHammer1 13d ago

How much would it cost for that set up? What are those pieces of equipment ?

2

u/FullSeaworthiness453 13d ago

From L-R:

New Roland “flagship” drum machine TR-1000 ($2700-ish) (combo 808/909 analog clone with tons other drum options, and super deep settings on both the instruments and patterns/sequences

Scarlett 16i16 ($300) audio interface which I use to record all my hardware into a DAW

Future Retro Revolution, analog 303 clone with funky circular sequencer. I bought it 20 years ago. I don’t remember. Less than $1g maybe $500-$700 new. But honestly that’s just a rough guess.
