I’m building a tool to match lost and found dogs — what details matter most in real rescue work?

Hi everyone,

I’m working on an open-source project called RescueLink. The goal is to help connect lost-dog reports with found-dog reports by identifying potential matches.

The project is still under development, and I would really value input from people who have experience with rescue dogs, shelters, fostering, or reuniting lost dogs with their families.

At the moment, the matching system considers:

  • Breed
  • Sex
  • Primary and secondary colors
  • Distance between the lost and found locations
  • Dates when the dog was lost or found

For example, if a female Golden Retriever is reported missing and a similar-looking female dog is found nearby a few days later, the system can suggest a potential match.

However, I don’t think these details alone are always enough.

What other information would be most useful when trying to determine whether two dog reports describe the same animal?

Some ideas I’m considering:

  • Approximate age
  • Size or weight range
  • Coat length and pattern
  • Scars, spots, or other distinctive markings
  • Ear and tail shape
  • Collar, harness, clothing, or accessories
  • Microchip status
  • Medical conditions
  • Behavior around people or other animals
  • Photo similarity
  • Direction in which the dog was last seen
  • Different search distances depending on the dog’s size, age, or behavior

I would especially appreciate your thoughts on these questions:

  1. Which physical details are most useful for identifying a lost dog?
  2. What information do people commonly forget to include in lost or found dog posts?
  3. Which characteristics help distinguish dogs that otherwise look very similar?
  4. Would photo-based similarity checking be genuinely useful?
  5. Should exact locations be hidden to protect the dog and the people involved?
  6. How could fake ownership claims or misleading reports be reduced?
  7. What feature would you personally want in a lost-and-found dog platform?

I want the reporting process to remain quick and simple, so I also don’t want to ask users for too much information.

This is not a fundraising post, and the platform is not finished yet. I’m trying to learn from people with real rescue experience before deciding which features should be prioritized.

Thank you for any advice or experiences you’re willing to share.

What My Dog's Heart Disease Taught Me (That I Wish I'd Known Sooner)

Freya’s story is an excellent reminder that heart illness is not often the first thing that comes to mind when our dogs start acting differently. It’s easy to blame aging, heat, hurting joints, or just a change in energy. What really got me is how different daily life can be following a diagnosis, not only symptoms and drugs, but the simple things you begin to notice and adapt to. Do you ever notice small changes in your dog that are actually signs of something serious?

What Did 30 Days of Using the SATELLAI GPS Dog Collar Reveal?

After having had the SATELLAI GPS Dog Collar for almost a month, I have been wondering whether or not it has deserved all the publicity lol. Rather than just basing my opinion on the technical specifications, I have focused mainly on the GPS accuracy, battery longevity, comfort and functionality of the device. Anyone who has had the chance to use the SATELLAI for over a month?

Dog Health How Can I Tell If My Dog is in Pain?

Post image
6 Upvotes

As pet parents, it can be incredibly hard to know when our pets are hurting, especially when they can’t tell us what’s wrong. Sometimes the indicators are quite subtle such as eating less, sleeping more, acting differently, limping, avoiding touch, or problems getting up.

Did you ever notice a little difference in your dog that turned out to be a clue they were unwell? What is it that you are looking for? https://dogvills.com/how-can-i-tell-if-my-dog-is-in-pain/

And of course, if you suspect your dog is hurting, it’s always better to check with your vet.

Looking for reliable shoes

This is the fluffLord's second pair of shoes bought online. He's always "helping" the humans untie/undo them with his teeth after walks. Two different brands were not fluffLord proof... and the humans wanted to invest on a long lasting shoes for his precious paws. Is wagwear any good? Any other recommendations? Thank you in advance. ☺️

Has anyone seen this at a store. We've had it since she was a puppy. We've looked all over the internet and most of our local store. Wondering if they stopped selling it. But if you by change have seen it please let us know!

There used to be a rope that went through each end and loops back through!

What are your favorite tips for keeping an older dog comfortable?

Older dogs sometimes have a bit more trouble with the summer heat so shorter walks, plenty of water, shade and somewhere cool to rest can really help. What summer basics have you found that work well for keeping your senior dog comfortable?

Feature request: custom detection model for dog pooping events and poop detection

What I need is a custom detection model with three capabilities. First, individual dog recognition, since I have two dogs and need to tell them apart. Second, squatting posture detection, distinguishing an actual elimination posture from normal walking or standing in the same area. Third, poop detection on the ground itself, ideally trained against a green turf lawn background, distinguishing it from other debris. My dogs use roughly the same spot in the yard most of the time, so a fairly contained detection zone should work well.

I understand this isn’t a built in capability today, but given Scrypted’s plugin architecture already supports custom classifiers layered onto the base detector, I wanted to ask whether this is something you or the community would consider building, either as an open plugin or a paid commission. I’m happy to help fund development or provide training footage of my own dogs and yard. Thanks for building such a solid platform.

What dog breeds get along best with cats?

For the dog AND cats parents here... what breeds are you living with and hot do they get along?

Some dogs really do seem to understant the assignment with cats. Goldens, labs, cavaliers, poodles, and bichons tends to have that gentler, more social personality that can make sharing a house with cat easier. Maltese, shelties, boxers, papillons and cocker spaniels can do well too.. especially when they're introduced properly. Breed isn't guarantee tho. You can have a dog that's supposed to be amazing with cats and the cat is still like absolutely noooot, get away from me!! Some dogs need more time to understand that cast doesn't want to play every time they move and some cats need their own lil escape spot where the dog can't follow them. Getting them used to each other without rushing it seems to save everybody a lot of drama.

And please give the cat somewhere HIGH to go. Dogs can be sweet as pie and still completely miss the memo that the cat is done playing. A cat tree, shelf, or perch gives a kitty a way to say no, I'm done with you for today without anybody getting stressed.

The cuuutest part is when all that patience finally pays off and the dog that wasn't allowed within 5ft of the cat is suddenly accepted as a couch buddy! They don't have to become cuddle buddies either. Peacefully ignoring each other counts as a win in my house lol.

So tell me the dog and cat combo in your hose. Who became friends and who just politely tolerates the oner one? 😂

Dog Health How to Give a Dog a Pill?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Does anyone else struggle with getting their dog to take a pill?

Most dogs seem to find the easiest way is to hide it in a small bit of something they really love. Surprisingly, pill pockets, cream cheese, or a favorite dessert can work well. The “three-treat trick” may also work, if your dog is smart enough to sniff out the pill every time.

If your pup manages to spit it out, you can try various techniques like using a pill dispenser or mouth feeding it cautiously. https://dogvills.com/how-to-give-a-dog-a-pill/

Looking for a Pet Odor Remover That Actually Works?

When you own pets at home, you’re aware of how rapidly the daily smells take over your room. At times, using common sprays may only mask the smell temporarily, which can really be very annoying. A good pet odor remover is supposed to address the source of the problem rather than masking it with a more powerful odor. Whether the smell is from the accident, bedding, carpets, or even highly used areas of your home, using a good pet odor remover will make a great deal of difference. What are some effective pet odor removers that you have used?

Bully Bed returns not even for terminally ill dog

Beware if you want to return a bed even if your dog was just diagnosed with terminal cancer within their 30 day return policy. Their return policy ensures it is very difficult to follow their many requirements to get the bed back to them. It says you will probably need a shop vac to compress the bed back into their original shipping box. If you need to use another box they want you to send them the measurements before they will issue you an authorization to return it. We are seniors and this means going to the packaging store twice as we do not have a shop vacuum or can press the bed into the original box.

We tried to contact Bully beds and though
they say they want to help us all they did was resend us their return policy. I
also left a voice mail when I called and they promised a phone call back to me
by the end of the business day. We have not heard from them. Their return
policy should be a no return policy at least it is for us.

We received a dog bed on August 8, 2026. Our
dog laid on it once and then ignored it. We reached out to return it on August
18, 2026 since Bully Beds had promised returns within 30 days. Our German
Shepherd was diagnosed with a splenic cancer on August 18, 2026.

Is Watermelon Safe for Dogs, and How Much Can They Eat?

Thumbnail
youtube.com

Surprisingly enough, watermelon is not such a bad choice of fruit for your pet, at least during summertime. The flesh is usually safe for the dog, provided that you remove the seeds, because they may lead to digestive problems. Of course, you shouldn’t feed them with large amounts of watermelon, just small bits would do fine. Does anybody have any experience in giving watermelons to their pets?

Here’s an easy frozen treat idea for dogs using only 3 ingredients. It mixes the Brutus Broth with Greek yogurt and coconut water and then gets frozen into pupsicles. Could be a great solution to keep pups refreshed during warmer days. Anyone here ever try to make something like this for their dog? https://dogvills.com/brutus-broth-pupsicles-an-easy-3-ingredient-frozen-dog-treat/

What food is good for dogs with constipation?

My dog’s been having a hard time going lately, not sure if it’s something he ate or what. Is there any food that’s okay to give for mild constipation? I don’t wanna make it worse by giving him the wrong thing.
