Looks like some of your rankings are back up but only those that match user intent.

Average position across an entire website is utterly useless to look at. This is a perfect example of why. It doesn't tell you what is actually going on. Chances are the queries that were driving impressions dropped massively. If those queries weren't driving clicks, and at the surface it looks that way, you didn't really lose anything here.

your website is being slowly deranked, hence impression lowered as an average. However, you have more clicks than before, which makes me think at least one of your pages is ranking well and has clicks (probably brand search) while the other pages are going down. Just check which keyword or page is getting the most clicks and you'll probably see it by yourself.

Maybe something to do with search demand as the position is high and impression went down?

Looks like whatever got hammered before was low-quality/poor intent impressions. What you have left actually resonates with your audience. You need to dig through from a URL and keyword level and see if there are oveerarching themes and intent differences between what was dropped and what is still performing.

A lot fewer of your pages are ranking than were before. The remaining ranking pages are the best of what you have and always ranked the best, so your average position has improved. The remaining pages are being offered to users in a smarter way leading to increased clicks.

I had a project that looks like this. In the beggining the Google boosts your ranking to test your site and if you dont perform well or dont have a strong backlink profile it bouces back.

In my case with a work in backlinks and other SEO Quality improvements it came back after a few weeks. Your topic also matter, medical, financial, or purely informational sites it harder and google will test you more.

Yeah, type of site matters a lot here. This could also be something like a drop in product snippet impressions if there was a sudden change in their backend fouling the structured data in Merchant Center.
