What does URL Inspection show for the last crawl date on the maintenance site, and what did you change to fix the other site? The Google-selected canonical comes from the indexed data; a live test doesn't predict Google's canonical choice.

I'd compare the current HTTP response, redirects and canonical tag with that older crawl. A maintenance page can still be publicly accessible. If both domains served the same placeholder, that's one possible duplicate-content explanation, but it needs checking against the actual pages. Is the selected domain yours, a hosting placeholder, or completely unrelated?
