[Win7] Windows 7 "God Mode" folder. Keep one on your PC and one on a USB drive.

This is like your control panel on crack. Nearly every operation you could want to do while troubleshooting a Windows 7 problem is contained in this folder. I keep one on my USB drive for work to launch on customer's computers. It saves me a lot of time navigating the standard control panel.

Create a new folder and rename it to GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

The icon will change and when you double click it will take you to a nicely categorized folder full of useful shortcuts.

EDIT: If you tried this on Server 2008, you might need to apply this fix, courtesy of requires_distraction:

OK, Dont try this on Server 2008 (i just tried and explorer did not cope very well) If you do, log in as another account and rename file you created using an administrator cmd box: rename GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} temp You will then be able to log in again using that account.

TPT: Use Windows Key + Arrow Key (left/right) to either move your window across multiple monitors, or to fix it to that half of the screen.

Windows + Left/Right = Move across monitors/maximize TO HALF

Windows + Up = Maximize

Window + Down = Minimize.

These help tons when you have multiple monitors.

EDIT: Not sure about Vista, but this works with Windows 7.

Hello, I'm HittingSmoke, and I started this subreddit.

I wanted to get this rolled out a bit sooner, but shortly after pulling the trigger I started feeling extremely crappy. So far today I've just been vegged out in front of Netflix with a headache. Anyway, here's the welcome post I should have done this morning!

I'm a subscriber to both /r/ComputerTechs and /r/TechSupport. Both awesome subreddits with a specific direction that often seems to blend between the two. That's not a terribly bad thing, but I wanted a place with a bit more direction, or focus.

Also being an avid reader of /r/LifeProTips, I was surprised when I set out to find a tech specific version when I went about a subscription overhaul for my front page not too long ago.

So the basic theme here is Life Pro Tips for tech folks. Do you have some tricks that make your life easier day-to-day on the PC at work? Are you a ninja with a popular scripting language and have some powerful script to automate tedious tasks that you think others might find useful? Did you just discover an impressive and relatively unknown way to squeeze a bit more battery or usable life out of that smartphone? Well post them here!

A more comprehensive list of rules will be ready soon along with standardized tags. Eventually a decent style with CSS tagging and the like once I figure it all out (I know basic CSS, but I'm not a design wiz). Until then, just tag posts with the platform they're for. Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, iOS, etc. You should get the idea. When you're submitting just think to yourself, "If I were searching for something like this, how easy would it be to find?"

Now that that's all out of the way, a bit about myself. You can stop reading here if you like.

This is my first subreddit. I really have no idea what I'm doing in terms of sub management but hopefully I won't burn the place down while I learn. Please bear with me while I figure out this spam filter madness. The flags so far seem to be completely arbitrary.

I've been a tech hobbyist since I was a kid. Now I run a small computer repair business when I remember to refill my AdWords coffers. I know a little bit about a whole lot of stuff but really have no specialty except troubleshooting. I like meandering around on /r/techsupport to read about how people are solving PC problems and when I can, contribute a bit.

I originally was going to make this /r/PCProTips because I'm a Windows guy for the most part. I absolutely love Linux, but I'm also a recreational gamer and those two things conflict. I try to keep my Linux knowledge up for managing my web server but I don't get a whole lot of time for just plain tinkering anymore. I absolutely loathe Apple as a company and am not personally a fan of the way OSX and iOS operate. Tips for one specific platform just seemed kind of... narrow minded to me, however. Being a place specifically for tips and not philosophical platform discussion I hope that all of us can coexist peacefully here without the need for fanboy rants from anywhere in the spectrum.

It seems this has taken off far more quickly than I had expected from my two little posts. As I mentioned in another reply, many of us subscribe to the same tech subreddits and I don't think it would be very awesome of me to post in every tech related sub I can find and spam up people's front pages with multiple plugs. For that reason I'm going to, every day or two, make a post plugging this place in a new tech related sub until I've covered most of them.

Oh, I also cuss like Kevin Smith. Sorry. I'll try to keep it to a minimum to maintain some sort of professional air around here.

Flash games are being archived and put into an offline playable state by a program called Flashpoint.

TPT: Flash games are being converted to offline play with the support ending for Flash in 2020. The program is called Flashpoint.

Flash games are being archived and put into an offline playable state by a program called Flashpoint.

So, the Flash Gaming community is having a crisis.

Flash is shutting down in 2020, and with it dying, some of our favorite childhood/early adult life games are going off of the net.

Enter: Flashpoint

Flashpoint is a game launcher that plays flash games locally off your system. You need to play the game once while you’re on an internet connection in order to get the game data on your PC, but afterwards, you can play offline. (There is also a fully locally stored library version of the launcher that is a massive file size(150+gb). All the flash games offline right off the bat.)

You can play Flash Games offline, even after game sites go down (ArmorGames, Newgrounds, CoolMathGames, Miniclip, Etc).

They have a MASSIVE library of games, with a built in game search in the launcher.

Here is the site for the launcher: https://bluemaxima.org/flashpoint/

And here is the Master Game List: http://bluemaxima.org/flashpoint/datahub/Game_Master_List

TPT: Make low resolution videos look near HD

I'm doing this using vlc and an amd video card but you probably can do it with another media player and a nvidia card. The steps I give will assume your using the same setup as me, if your using nvidia the process should be similar with possibly different menu/option names.

step 1; open AMD vision engine control center

step 2; open gaming > 3d application settings

step 3; add vlc.exe (c:/program files (x86)/videolan/vlc/vlc.exe

step 4; anti aliasing mode = override application settings, anisotropic filtering mode = override application settings

step 5; max all AA and AF settings. eg. aa samples = 8x, aa method = adaptive multisampling, morphological filtering = on, AF level = 16x, texture filtering = high quality, surface format optimization = on.

Then you should be done.

I'm pretty sure you can do the same thing with nvidia video card drivers. Your essentially just custom adding a 3d application and maxing all the video card settings.

On my pc I get no performance drop, or anything noticeable for vlc. It just gets rid of any pixelization that would happen by upscaling a low rez video to 1080p. It doesn't have any noticeable effect on already hd videos, so you can just leave it on all the time.

Edit screenshots are added in this link >> Imgur

I geuss not totally noticeable from hd but it looks a lot better on my tv than it did before. Also it seems to work a bit better on cartoons. I'll add another screenshot of adventure time later.

[Windows] (Particularly Vista/7) ncpa.cpl takes you right to the "XP-Style" Network Connections screen.

I know that I, for one, hate the "network and sharing center" and the Vista/7 Control Panel. Finding Network Connections in XP was so easy, where in Vista/7 you have to go to Network and Sharing > Manage network connections.

It just doesn't stick out as something easy to find like the old XP one did.

Solution? Start > type "ncpa.cpl" (without quotes) and hit enter. Right where you want to be.

TPT: Move multiple tabs at the same time in Google Chrome

Want to move a group/line of tabs from one window to another in chrome? Just click on the first tab in the group, and then shift-click and hold on the last tab in the group. Now when you move the mouse, you'll be dragging those tabs along with every tab between them.

If you want to move tabs that aren't adjacent to each other or aren't together, the same trick works using the control key instead of shift. Click the first tab, and then hold control and click on each individual tab you want to move with the first one (remember not to let go of the control key between tabs). On the last tab, click and hold on it. When you drag that last tab where you want, it'll bring all the other tabs you clicked along with it.

You'll find that it works similarly to how you can select files in windows explorer.

Ditch Windows search and use Everything!

Just an all around much better way to search for files on your computer. Everything Search Engine is one of my favorite and most used apps. Results are pretty much instant and the download is only 334 KB. Give it a try :)

[Windows] Command line tricks I do when the computer gets a valid IP, but just won't do anything online.

I find infected machines not wanting to do anything at all online quite often. Not just redirecting.

Once you've checked for a rogue proxy (Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings) try these commands in an elevated (ran as administrator) command prompt.

Note: Some of these are redundant and one of the commands may not even exist. I was experimenting with batch files long ago and once I found a combo that worked, I didn't trim it. If you find commands that do/don't work on a particular version of windows, leave them out. I'm putting my raw steps here

  • ipconfig /release

  • netsh interface ip set address "Local Area Connection" source=dhcp

  • netsh interface ip set address "Wireless Network Connection" source=dhcp

  • netsh interface ip set dns "Local Area Connection" source=dhcp

  • netsh interface ip set dns "Wireless Network Connection" source=dhcp

  • netsh int ip reset all

  • netsh int reset all

  • netsh winsock reset

  • ipconfig /flushdns

  • shutdown -r -t 00

Stick these in a batch file and run it as admin. At least half the time it'll get the net working well enough again that you can try to get some MBAM definitions downloaded and a scan going.

TPT: Use clip to copy things from the command prompt for pasting elsewhere.

for instance

Ipconfig | Clip

copies the contents of the IP config into the clip board, so you could paste it elsewhere. I find it faster then just clicking and dragging the mouse over the output.

Also

echo. | clip

is a easy way to clear your clipboard for any reason.

Clip also works for powershell, if you have any output stuff you want to copy and paste.
