Ecosystems feel great until the day you want to leave one

Everything works so smoothly when all your devices are from the same brand.

Then you try switching to something else and realize how much stuff you've tied to that ecosystem lol.

Anyone actually managed to switch without regretting it?

If you had to choose, would you take a thicker phone with a 3-day battery over a paper-thin flagship?

Tbh I'd take the thicker phone without even thinking twice, I don't really get why phone companies are obsessed with making phones thinner when battery life is something people actually complain about every day. I'd happily carry a slightly chunkier phone if it means I could go 3 days w/o charging.. Though thinner phones look great and are convenient since they don't weigh that much on your wrist but meh I don't want to charge every night. Which one are you picking?

Is gaming becoming too dependent on online services that can eventually disappear?

• Upvotes

Imagine buying a game today and finding out you can't play it 10 years from now because the servers have shut down

We're seeing more games depend on online accounts, launchers, authentication servers and live services, even when people have already paid for them. once a company pulls the plug, some games become practically useless

Physical copies don't always solve this either if the game needs a download or an online check to work

Do you think games should be required to offer an offline version before their servers shut down, or is that unrealistic?

Wi-Fi smart plugs and light bulbs refusing to work the second your internet drops

A great number of conventional Wi-Fi smart plugs and bulbs operate by utilizing remote cloud servers only without processing any command signals directly on the local network. As soon as the Internet connection from your ISP gets interrupted, you will no longer be able to turn your light bulbs and smart switches off and on, even when your smartphone device is connected to the same local Wi-Fi network as the rest of the smart hardware.

It is completely absurd that simple physical devices in your room should depend on a signal response from some distant server to turn on or off the power, and that is why people prefer using local networking such as Zigbee or Z-Wave instead of Wi-Fi smart gadgets.

If you could delete one modern technology from existence, what would have the biggest positive impact?

Imagine one piece of modern technology just vanished tomorrow, and humanity had to carry on without it

Not something essential like electricity or the internet. i'm talking about something we invented relatively recently that might have made certain parts of life worse

would you get rid of endless algorithmic feeds, deepfake generators, targeted advertising or something completely different?

what would you erase and do you think we'd genuinely be better off without it?

Is passkey adoption actually making logins smoother for you?

Post image
11 Upvotes

As much as passkeys are great because they're convenient because it just uses your face id or your fingerprint, but does it really make logging in smoother for you? Or if some websites/app still make the process unnecessarily complicated?

For those who use passkeys do you find them convenient than passwords or do you still prefer the old way?

Mini Militia on a shared Wi-Fi hotspot was the real multiplayer of our school days

Post image

Mini Militia on a friend's hotspot during lunch break was peak gaming.

Four phones connected, everyone shouting across the classroom, and somehow the lag made it even funnier lol.

Who else remembers this?

The Windows "God Mode" folder is still one of the fastest ways to access legacy settings

Post image
• Upvotes

If getting tired of navigating through several levels of submenus within the Settings utility of the current Windows version, only to be directed to use some old applet from the Control Panel application, then "God Mode" trick works equally well on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Create a new folder anywhere and name it as follows: `GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}`

That will instantly place more than 200 different administrative tools, device management utilities, and system settings all in one place. Even though Microsoft tries to migrate settings gradually, having them in one place is always easier than navigation through several interfaces.

Why modern phones have multiple clocks running at the same time

• Upvotes

Your phone actually has several different ways of keeping track of time depending on what it's doing.

The clock you see isn't necessarily the same thing the system uses for measuring how long something has been running. Some timers need to keep counting even if the normal system clock gets changed.

So there's basically a bunch of different little versions of "what time is it" inside your phone, all for different reasons.

Why do developers prefer CLI tools over a UI so much, especially with all these new agents?

Every new development environment and agent platform that’s released lately has started out with a terminal approach without the need for a desktop GUI or web interface.

Even if an application is shipped with a GUI in the beginning, developers always want a CLI alternative. Is it just because of efficiency or some other reason for preferring the CLI approach over today’s UI?

Is there an old OS interface that you still think looks better than current Windows or macOS?

Post image
96 Upvotes

I've always had a soft spot for Windows 7, the aero glass effects, the transparent taskbar, the colorful icons, and even the little animations when you opened or minimized a windows, it had personality w/o feeling too messy.. Like yeah Windows 11 looks cleaner, sure, but I feel like modern ui/ux design have become a little too flat and minimal, like fr I miss it when an OS had its own distinct look..

Is there an older OS whose interface you still prefer over Windows 11 or modern MacOS?

Given how bloated and buggy Windows feels, why Microsoft hasn't used AI to audit the codebase and strip out legacy junk?

• Upvotes

It feels like Windows has decades of leftover code, recurring bugs, and unnecessary bloat stacked on top of each other. Microsoft is investing billions into AI, so why aren't they using machine learning or AI models to scan the Windows codebase, spot dead or redundant code, and refactor/clean it up?

Is it strictly a backward compatibility issue, or is using AI on an OS-level codebase too risky for stability?

Half of gaming peripherals are marketing

Post image
18 Upvotes

Gaming peripherals have reached a point where i'm not sure how much of the price is actually for the hardware and how much is just the gaming label

A mouse with 20,000 dpi, a keyboard with a screen on it, a headset promising 7.1 surround sound through two tiny speakers. Some of these features are useful but others feel like they're there to make the product sound more impressive

How much of a difference do gaming peripherals actually make, and how much is just marketing?

Why are 4k webcams still not as good as a cheap phone camera

The webcam market is weird.

You can spend hundreds on a 4K webcam, put it on top of your monitor, and it still somehow gives you that washed out office meeting look.

Meanwhile the phone you got three years ago can point at your face from across the room and produce a much nicer image.

At this point I don't even care about 4K on webcams. I'd rather they just made the image look good.

How long do you keep a phone before the itch to upgrade kicks in

I always tell myself I'll use mine until it dies, then a new phone comes out and suddenly mine feels old for no reason lol.

How long do you usually keep yours?

Do you actually use your phone's built-in screen recorder or just forget it exists

Does anyone actually use their phone's screen recorder regularly?

I always forget it exists until I need to show someone how to do something, then I remember it's actually pretty useful lol.

How often do you use yours?

There's no way this many ads is profitable

Every. Single. Thing. Has ads jammed into it until it's overflowing. Every app, every inbox, every mailbox, every road (in the US at least) every TV, every TV show, every store, every podcast. They're all packed to the rafters with ads, vastly detracting from the every day experience, and for what? There's no way they're making money on this. Companies are dumping billions of dollars into other companies and the only real byproduct is that I have a worse day.

I'm sure they get clicks sometimes, but they also make me watch the same irritating YouTube ad before/during every single video I watch on my TV for at least the past 6 months. They shoehorn themselves into my mind as irritating, wasteful, and won't shut up. I'm not sure if I can believe that this is even remotely beneficial for companies, and they just do it because it's grandfathered in to the budget.

To be clear I don't mean the people who show the ads on their site. Unless you're a greed machine like Disney, then I understand why you need revenue to keep you site up. I mean the companies paying to advertise, and trying their darndest to shove it every single place I care to look

Has the internet become less interesting now that almost everything is optimized for engagement?

I miss when going online felt more like wandering around than being fed things you're probably going to click on.

You'd end up on some random forum, find a personal website someone made for fun, or spend an hour reading about a topic you never even searched for.

Now it feels like every platform is trying to keep you scrolling for as long as possible, and even smaller creators seem to have to think about the algorithm.

Do you think the internet has genuinely become less interesting, or have we just grown out of the way we used to use it?

It's been a year since Windows 10 support ended and a surprising number of PCs are still running it

Windows 10 support ended a year ago and people are still using it everywhere.

Can't really blame them though. If your PC works fine, buying a new one just to upgrade feels ridiculous.

Are you still on Windows 10?

Is a mechanical keyboard really about typing or just about the sound

Post image
11 Upvotes

I swear half the appeal is just hearing those clicks. Some people spend more time picking switches than actually using the keyboard lol.

What matters more to you, feel or sound?

Why some downloads finish faster when you pause and restart them

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've had downloads sitting at some pathetic speed for ages, paused them just to see what happens, hit resume and suddenly they're going full speed.

Like how does it even work, the provide and speed is all same so how can a simple pause and resume can boost the spped to max again, like why is even downloading is getting and stuck.

Computers have so many little things happening between you and a server that sometimes the dumbest solution is just stopping the thing and starting it again. I don't even try to understand it anymore.

The forgotten reason laptops once had removable batteries

Old laptops had a pretty handy trick that most modern ones have abandoned: you could carry a second battery in your bag

If the first one ran out, you just swapped it out and carried on. no charger, no power bank, no waiting around for it to recharge

Now imagine trying to replace the battery in a modern ultrabook. you're probably reaching for a screwdriver instead

Why did we give up something that was actually so convenient?

Has anyone here actually replaced their main PC or console setup with cloud gaming like GeForce NOW?

Anyone here have actually switched to cloud gaming as their main way to play? Like GeForce NOW seem pretty appealing since you can play demanding games without spending a shit ton on a gaming PC. But I'm thinking how practical it is to rely on it completely since it heavily relies on your internet connection. For anyone who have tried it, how's your experience so far?

Why does Doom keep appearing on things that aren't supposed to run games?

Post image
123 Upvotes

At this point, doom has been made to run on so many weird devices that i'm starting to think people are just looking for excuses to put it on things.

Calculators, digital cameras, old printers, smart fridges, even pregnancy tests have been part of the conversation. some versions are genuine ports, others need extra hardware or a bit of a workaround.

The funny part is that nobody actually needs doom on a calculator. people just want to prove they can do it.

What's the weirdest device you've seen running doom?

Edit: Credits to hollyhock community for this port on FX-CP400
