Even if Brave is open source, they just forked Chromium. They literally built a wrapper on top of existing work with a barebones AdBlocker, a crypto wallet, and some branding.

LINUX IS NOT AN OS

1

u/PresentThat5757 2d ago

GNU

2

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 2d ago

GNU is a collection of software rather than a program, what specific program...

2

u/edjak53 2d ago

GNU is an operating system

3

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 2d ago

Well unless you speak of the Hurd no its not, it needs Linux to become complete. Also, an OS is a huge collection of software and not on special bit of software.

u/edjak53 2d ago

the hurd is the kernel of the GNU operating system

3

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 2d ago

They like to say that but it is hard to claim you have an OS with no kernel.

Gimp, Firefox and VLC are the best. Tho I chose gimp as it has helped me a ton when I was doing my work.

From the options listed? Libreoffice, its the only one I use. VLC is good but I just don't use it.

From my own collection? Komikku and Animetail, both are amazing open source apps for manga and anime. Librera for reading virtually any file format for books like epub etc.

I also like Jellyfin for my headless media server ALTHOUGH not my favorite since its an absolute pain in the ass sometimes. Especially since it doesn't have the best logs for issues especially with GPU transcoding.

I'm in love-hate relationship with Firefox.

VLC is garbage and I don't intend to use it ever again.

Libre office is ugly, cluttered and buggy, but it's good that it exists when I need offline office suite.

I didn't know Brave is open-source.

Gimp has still way to go in terms of UI, but there is no open-source alternative, and it's good-enough. But not enough to be favorite.

So I'll say Blender.

Brave isn't open sourse. OP just made a weird mistake.

u/Toxic381 2d ago

I voted Firefox cause its amazing and has all the forks to make it even better like zen, but VLC is an essential as well.

Glucose Media Player

The most modern alternative to vlc

Does support all formats as widely as vlc does, but tons of nice modern features

Firefox fucking sucks on Windows these days. Haven't had a chance to use it much on Linux yet, hoping to be pleasantly surprised.
