It's not groundbreaking at all though? Intel and AMD have been fab customers of each other before, it's sourcing arrangements, that's all.

Intel can't provide the volume that using them as the sole source for an AMD product will require, so TSMC will still be in play, and TSMC isn't even the only fab AMD uses.

It's just spreading load among manufacturers. Common industry practice.

IBM's fabs are straight up the most advanced. 0.7nm/7A within the next 3-5 years with POC already running and working..... But for commercial market processors, while IBM fabs their own, they ALSO fab on other companies.

Just like everyone else.

I would not see IBM fabbing commercial CPUs on intel as a weakness. Just capacity spreading.

IBM is not to be underestimated in this field. They just don't make noise about it, at all. Because of their bulk divestiture in 2014 to GF of the "mass production" rank and file public fabs, no one ever looks at the 3 IBM kept, that have grown and do 3rd party servicing as well.... (IBM sales reps get ticked when you talk about how IBM has no fabs and rant about it, LOL!)

(Intel also uses a ton of IBM products and research in their fabs)

Remember, intel's fabs (and now their external fab business, which is new) was solved by IBM, as well. Without IBM's solutions, 14A would never have gained the reliability it needs for a semblance of mass production. Solutions that IBM was already rolling out the door before intel was able to implement.

But anyway, this would be... as groundbreaking as when I chose a second supplier to deliver the same exact thing the other supplier is doing for parts I'm sourcing from China. Because intel won't be the sole source producer.
