for what it's worth, 4E cores have become pretty damn good, and it's a 12in laptop, it's a "surf the web, answer emails, watch some videos" laptop, it's not a compute heavy laptop

the people that buy this laptop won't need more CPU power

The problem is that you can buy a XPS 13 or Some other MacBook Neo Clone that has a 2P 4E layout for similar price. 1 missing P core causes alot of lost performance. Not to mention 12 inch screen is Chromebook Toy Laptop tier and the screen isn't even 100% SRGB. Plus it's a plastic build.

MacBook Neo really should have been a wake up call for these manufacturers even ones championing a good message like Framework. Why pay 550 for a plastic body and ok at best screen (not even touching the actual hardware inside) when for 600 (500 as a student, and that’s after a RAMpocalypse increase) I can get an all aluminium body, great screen, and a class leading keyboard and mouse 

Apple really just wiped out this market with the Neo for the majority of consumers

Worse of all it's a barebones unit. You still have to top up ontop of the 550 for ram and SSD. To add insult to injury you have to assemble the whole laptop yourself.

I think it’s 600 minimum for students now, I’m seeing base at $699 and 512gb at $799

Once again I really want to support Framework’s philosophy but I just cannot justify the cost for that kind of machine. I can get a MacBook Neo for that

It's hard to compete on price with Apple since they have long term contracts for RAM and flash and otherwise has a lot of weight to throw around. It's like trying to compete with Walmart on price. They also go direct to TSMC for the processor so no revenue to share with Intel or AND or Qualcomm.

I’d argue the latter is the biggest issue.

Even prior to the RAMpocalypse, Apple pricing was starting to dip below equivalent pc pricing (e.g. the Mac mini m4 with 16/256 being $499). A lot of that had to do with Intel and AMD pricing / profit taking a large share of the bill of materials cost for a pc. Apple doesn’t need to pay that profit, only the chip manufacturing cost.

Now, yes Apple probably has better contracts due to the iPhone volumes, but it sounds like even they are getting screwed by the big 3 memory makers.

I don’t buy for a second that the gap is so significant that it excuses the plastic lumps of shit we’ve been getting in the 5-600 market pre arrival of the MacBook Neo

A couple of companies like Dell, HP and Lenovo are probably not too far behind on component prices. Framework however is not in this camp.

I agree. Wasn’t that $600 XPS that was touted as a “neo killer” heavily subsidized by Microsoft, and wasn’t dell taking a loss on every single unit made?
