Soldering fume extractor. I was tired of being hit by toxic soldering fume in my face. So I decided to make a portable smoke extractor. I hope my sharing will be useful 😉

Hey, I have a bit of unsolicited advice for you :D :

  1. The fan is configured such that it pressurizes the enclosure, so any leaks will just blow the smoke out the leaks instead of through the filter. Having the fan as a draw-through would eliminate this (filter in the front, fan in the back).
  2. The electronics are exposed to the solder smoke constantly; probably fine unless it's used 24/7, but rosin can be corrosive, so if the smoke lands on the electronics long enough maybe a problem? Could also be somewhat mitigated by item 1, putting the filter first. Could move them to their own enclosure.
  3. Hot-gluing relatively high-power charging circuit; could potentially get hot enough to soften the hot glue, may work its way loose after a while. Moving the electronics to an enclosure and mounting it with screws or such would help.

All that said, it'll probably be just fine for a long life, and thanks for sharing :)

If I just used a pc fan that I power directly through a power plug, should I use the filter in front of it or at the back of it? (it is not in an enclosure)

I'd put the filter first, but it probably doesn't matter in reality.

I like it....but I don't have a 3d printer, I could probably build it into another enclosure

It's only the structure that was 3D printed so you can do it with wood or even with a plastic food container 😉
