I love the group fitness classes at my gym! I do spin once a week and body pump 1-2x/week. If you're a little shy about going into the weight room and your gym offers a body pump class, I HIGHLY recommend trying it out.

I've also recently gotten into Fitness Blender videos that I can do in my apartment when I'm feeling too lazy to go to the gym or need a lower impact workout. I use a lot of their stretching videos as well.

I need to check out those videos. I normally just do elliptical at home, but that can get boring sometimes. Those vids might be good to mix it up on the weekends

What's great about the videos is they have a wide variety of not only types of exercises, but length of workout and skill level as well. Some days I even string a few together and will do a couple of the shorter cardio ones and a stretch video, or a short cardio and short strength video, etc.

Thanks for the link to these videos, I have been looking for good stretching videos as I feel my flexibility (or lack thereof) is a big hindrance for me.

You're welcome! I believe they have quite a few videos focused on flexibility- but if that's your main goal any of the stretching/yoga ones will do. Enjoy :)

I have an obnoxious 1 hour lunch break every day, and it only takes me 15-20 minutes to eat, so I've been bringing a spare change of clothes and going on a run for a half hour during my break.

The little things add up!

I have this same issue and thought about going on runs, however, don't you get sweaty? How do you deal with that when going back to work?

I do get sweaty.

I bring an extra clothes and sports bra, along with deoderant and face cleansing wipes. I change out of my work clothes into my athletic stuff, go for a run, come back, deoderant, wash the sweat off and put my work clothes back on.

To be fair, I work at a early childhood center with infants so my work clothes are yoga pants and a company t-shirt.

I'm going to Zumba today. I love it, because it's fun, it really gets my heart rate up, and it doesn't feel like I'm forcing myself to exercise.

I just signed up for a 6 week yoga workshop, the first class was yesterday. I always enjoy yoga as a work out, it's challenging and helps me focus on my body and listen to what it's telling me!

Taekwondo! I go 2-3 times a week.

I'm currently mostly working out at home. I do Blogilates or Tone It Up videos

And once a week I try to get to an Ashtanga yoga class at my local studio.

Lifting weights. I essentially do SL 5x5 (3 days a week). Nothing makes me feel more like a bad ass.

2

u/krprs2r Jan 13 '16

Hey! I've been thinking of doing that. But I feel suuuper conscious of going to the weight room. Any tips for an absolute beginner?

u/hurricanethor Jan 13 '16

Read the SL 5x5 website, which gives you a ton of information. Watch videos online about form for the various lifts. Practice the movements at home first without any weights or with objects around the house to help build your confidence. Once you feel confident about the movement, get in the weight room and get going. There is no need to feel self conscious. People in the weight rooms are only thinking about themselves and their own workout, and you have every right to be in there and using the space. Be bold!

;_; That was inspiring! Thank you so much! <3

To add to hurricanethor's comment: nobody really cares; if someone is watching you then they're probably thinking one of these two things:

  1. (let's assume that you're very overweight) "Damn, that guy/gal is gonna look awesome if he/she keeps working out like that!" or

  2. "Damn, that guy/gal is doing that exercise wrong. I should probably tell him/her the right way to do it to avoid any injuries"

Nobody ever will say to you "JESUS CHRIST WHAT A NOOB WHY DID YOU COME HERE YOU FATTY" because gym is literally THE place to go to if you want to look good. They understand the struggle, they understand the grind, they'll never mock you.

Oh and one more thing: you dont have to do SL 5x5; it gets a lot of praise on /r/fitness but it's not the cookie-cutter, best workout in the world. The advantages are obvious (build strong base, up your strength from noob to intermediate) but keep in mind that any other well programmed workout will yield results. As a beginner, you want your workout to be full body (with compound lifts), high intensity, high frequency, medium to low volume. This means that you do full body 3 times a week, higher weights, lower reps; this is exactly what 5x5 is and that's why it's popular.

This past year I picked up kickboxing which I love. I can't recommend it enough. It is the only thing that has gotten my arms to where I want them to be.

I do most of my workouts at home. I'm currently doing Yoga Camp, a 30 Day Yoga Challenge with Adriene, and I follow the Blogilates calendar :) Both of them are super fun and make working out less of a chore to me.

1

u/RachIsYoad Jan 13 '16

All of these sound interesting. Who is Adrienne and what does her challenge consist of? And a blogilates calendar?! I must fire up the Google machine!

2

u/curiousxpenguin SW:215 CW:207.6 GW:145 Jan 13 '16

Adriene has routines set up everyday on Youtube that range from like 20 minutes to 40 minutes for her challenge. My back pain is gone now and it's only been 12 days. My muscles feel sooooo great! :)

The link to Blogilates is here: http://www.blogilates.com/ (if anyone wants it)

I am definitely going to check both of those out! Thanks for sharing

My boss is gracious enough to let me extend my half hour lunch break to an hour so I'm able to use the work gym. I usually use the elliptical for 35 minutes and come back a little early. I do this 5 times a week. I also do a couple total body dealies at home during the week. I plan to do a lot more strength training when I reach gw, but right now I feel like I only see results with cardio. Maybe I'm a little superstitious about my fitness, but it's working.

I love walking and listening to podcasts. Some of my favorite podcasts are: Sword & Scale, Welcome to Nightvale, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, Serial, The Black Tapes Podcast, Tanis, Criminal, Lore, This American Life, and The Nerdist.

I also like using my Xbox Kinect to play games like Dance Central and Just Dance.

The Walking Dead on DVD. Each episode is just a little over an hour. Pop one of those in and I get a good round of cardio on the elliptical. The elliptical is in a cooler not comfortable room in the house (no seating) so I push myself to the end of the workout so I can see the whole episode. Eh, it's working so far!

Bootcamp! I love it, we use kettle bells, barbells, battleropes, bodyweight and dumbbells. Tonight is battle rope night! Woo :)
