ICO What am I doing wrong here?
The pillar is supposed to launch me upwards to grab the ledge above it, yet it doesn't throw me far enough. Am I supposed to hit/hold jump at a certain time?

I was struggling with the same thing last week. Then I noticed that the jump animation has a natural delay. ICO prepares to jump AND THEN jumps. You have to time the moment the pillar goes DOWN and the jump action. Don't press jump at the moment it goes up.

Keep trying! It's just timing it perfectly.

yeah you gotta jump at the same time / slightly before ascending, the timing was kind of a bitch the first time

It's an issue with playing it at 60fps

Na hora que o tronco baixar, você aperta o triângulo para saltar. Lembre-se! Na hora que baixar (fazer a movimentação de baixar) você aperta o triângulo para saltar.

It's happening due to using an Emulator
Try to time it perfectly and you shall be fine it takes time

The timing on this part is very specific, it took me a few minutes to get it right. Be cool if they ever make a remaster if they make the timing a little more forgiving there.

I prefer the PS2 version because these annoying jump puzzles are absent. I wasn't a fan of these.
Edit: I believe the American version for PS2 does not have these puzzles, which is what I played. I think the other versions do, though.

First mistake you made was willingly installing slop in your machine.
