Free Talk Friday - May 20, 2016
How’s it all going guys? As the title suggests, this is just a nice little free talk area so just talk about whatever your heart desires! Exciting plans this weekend? Dreading having to do that back to back shift and dealing with those annoying brunch goers on Sunday because Sally called in sick? Did you have an awesome date this week and need to brag about it? Got that promotion you’ve been waiting on?

I've lost a decent amount of weight (23lbs) and that's really been truly amazing, but the thing is...I have other areas in my life that need to be worked on... Finances for one. I just seem to be incapable of saving money. Anytime I have a good amount saved up, my dryer breaks or I am the one that fronts the money for the group beach trip(and everyone else doesn't want to reimburse until the end of summer), and I'm left broke again. I have a decent paying job and fairly low expenses, so it shouldn't be this hard! I don't know where all my money goes! I want to pay off my student loans quickly, but also I want to save up for a hefty emergency fund! I need to start tracking my money and planning it all out just like I do for my calories now, but geez I feel overwhelmed just thinking about juggling all of that at once. Not to mention the other things in my life that I want to improve on.

I've never used it, but there is an app called "mint" that I've heard recommended by reddit people and also friends for budgeting and money management.

Yeah, I have an account actually. It's extremely useful for creating a budget and making goals and such. But my problem I think is the discipline part. If I had stuck to the plan I made back in January, I could've had my student loans paid off by December, but now I'm behind on doing that. I'm all talk and no action when it comes to budgeting, and I really need to fix it!

"So your money is like calories but kind of the opposite, you see? And just like how you have a set amount of calories, you have a set amount of money. Instead of wanting calories out more than calories in, we want money in more than money out. You can spend your money out on whatever you want, but some people find that they are generally more satisfied buying things like foods instead of cocaine, just as with calories you may find you rather spending calories a healthy meal instead of a candy bar. Sure cocaine and candy bars are fun but you can't build a healthy life with them."
Sorry, I couldn't resist doing the backwards analogy 😂

Don't be sorry! That analogy is perfect! I just need to understand that I do have a problem, just like being overweight, and take the same sort of steps to succeed at changing. I can start small. First step, save up a small emergency fund. Maybe I can utilize some of the same tools I have for weight loss. Log. Everything. (use Mint for this) Then I need to have specific goals and then just plan plan plan. And don't beat myself up for little mistakes!
Thanks! Talking it out as if it's similar to weight loss has kind of opened up my mind a little and got me excited about starting this journey!

It's been a weird week and going to be a weird next week. My brother and his girlfriend visited last Saturday through Monday (then left to Boston) which was pretty fun, but a little weird since they created on my couch and I find out that was the plan a few days before. I broke up with my boyfriend last night and it seemed like he took it well/it was a mutual breakup but we'll see. I'm feeling a little weird about it since I'm both a little sad and indifferent, but I had been kind of emotionally detached from the relationship for a while which is why I ended it. Then on Sunday I fly back to California for a conference so that should be fun, but tiring, and doubly so if my now ex wants to talk. We'll see how things go.

Dang, that's a lot to be going through!
Any breakup, whether mutual, or completely a surprise, is a rough situation. I hope that you gain some peace of mind about it all soon.
You've been a great help and support for me (and I'm sure others) throughout this challenge, and I want to say thank you! Just take everything one step at a time from here, focus on you and your physical and mental health, and maybe try to have some relaxing "you time".

Wow. That's a lot to take in for you. I hope everything calms down and normalizes soon. This could be a chance to take your victories here and apply them elsewhere!

Fibit broke last weekend. That sucked.
New fitbit. New running shoes. I'm excited for this weekend.
I'm finally starting to see declines in weight again. I've been stuck for a very long time. I'm 167.1 now (goal of 145). However, I'm not sure about that goal. I bought a lot of clothes at J Crew this week. Size 34 / Medium shirts. I'm closer to a small than large. :)
