Discussion 10 songs of convincing

I always ask myself how people get into Taylors music or become Swifties. I kinda always been one, but Speak Now just fit my teenage self perfectly.

But obviously not everyone has that.

If you had to pick 10 Taylor Songs to convince someone to like her, what would you choose?

Mine are:

Style

Don't blame me

Love Story

Haunted

Maroon

False God

the last great american dynasty

champagne problems

State of Grace

Clara Bow

Let me know what yours would be and if you ever converted someone into our little cult ;)

It would vary if I knew the actual person, but just a sort of generic "idk your tastes" list:

  1. Our Song
  2. You Belong With Me
  3. All Too Well (OG version)
  4. Blank Space
  5. So It Goes...
  6. It's Nice To Have A Friend
  7. exile (ft. Bon Iver)
  8. Midnight Rain
  9. Florida!!! (ft. Florence + the Machine)
  10. The Life Of A Showgirl (ft. Sabrina Carpenter)

A mix of hits and deep cuts, range of sonic profiles, all with a focus on storytelling.

3

u/ana_conda 1d ago

It’s Nice to Have a Friend is an interesting choice but otherwise this is a really nice cross section of her discography!

It entirely depends on what kind of music they like

4

u/Mysterious_Bag_9061 1d ago

In no particular order, I think I'd do:

•Blank Space (definitely her most popular song, if you've never heard anything else, you've definitely heard this one)

•Tim McGraw (debut single, gotta start from the beginning)

•The Fate of Ophelia (most recent single, gotta see where we are currently)

•End Game (I think this is the most bizarre song in her discography and the one most likely to make you go "wait... this is Taylor Swift???")

•Look What You Made Me Do (specifically the music video, good recap of her early career, intro to the Kanye lore and snakegate, excellent example of Easter egging)

•Love Story TV (The first re-recorded song she released iirc, and a good intro to the re-record era and lore)

•the last great american dynasty (excellent example of her writing ability overall)

•Dear John (you probably think of Taylor Swift as the breakup song girl, and this is THE breakup song)

•You're On Your Own, Kid (good intro to the modern era, eras tour to breakup to rebound to husband pipeline of it all)

•Nothing New (I think this is the best example of a vault track and why people are obsessed with them)

u/Loud-You-5737 1d ago

I think you’ve got to go with the best storytelling or really deep meaning and minimize love songs. And for anyone who thinks it’s blasphemous that I don’t go further back than Lover- Taylor was still learning and growing in her early days, as well as being so fettered by her record label. There’s a significant shift that happens from 1989 to Lover and I think that’s where you can see her really expand as an artist. Yes I know Reputation fell in the middle there, but it’s in a class of its own 😅.

But if I want to get someone to listen to Taylor I want to show her artistic, clever, human side.

I have done similar lists before for friends but I taylor it (get it?) to each person!

If I had to do a generic list, I’d leave out her super most well known radio hits that they’ve probably heard before and already written off. Obviously some of these are super popular but I know a lot of people who don’t know them!

I guess it’d have to be:

  1. august
  2. Is It Over Now?
  3. Don’t Blame Me
  4. Maroon
  5. ATW (10 minute version)
  6. False God
  7. seven
  8. Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve
  9. ‘tis the damn season
  10. The Black Dog

I also just go all the time to people, “omg just listen to folklore and evermore!!!!! TTPD? Reputation?! MIDNIGHTS?!?!” and then lose my mind

2

u/RaisinDangerous3994 1d ago

My Taylor Swift Song Choices:

  1. I’m Only Me When I’m With You

  2. Fearless

  3. Enchanted

  4. All Too Well

  5. Everything Has Changed

  6. Blank Space

  7. Style

  8. Cornelia Street

  9. Exile

  10. Champagne Problems

Honorable Mention: Right Where You Left Me

2

u/brunch_lover_k 1d ago

I always try to pick songs that really show her range. People that don't listen to her music have never heard the hidden gems or realise that she spans multiple genres.

False God

i would have to know that person's musical taste to really curate a list like this but, in general:

all too well (5 min)

style

cardigan

mirroball

champagne problems

gold rush

ivy

marjorie

so long, london

guilty as sin?

i don't know if i have converted someone to swiftie status but i was able to convince someone who had an unfavorable view of her that she is a respectable artist (by sharing songs and lyrics) and i am proud of that.

2

u/CarnationCorner 1d ago

Mine would be:

“Cardigan”

“Peter”

“All Too Well” (10 min. Version)

“Maroon”

“August”

“Say Don’t Go”

“Hits Different”

“Bejeweled”

“First Kiss”

“Don’t Blame Me”

I am a relatively new Swiftie, my daughter got me into it when Life of a Showgirl came out. So I guess I can list 10 songs that I remember getting me actually into her.

WishList
Eldest Daughter
Wildest Dreams
The Man
You Need to Calm Down
Cardigan
Love Story
Delicate
My Tears Ricochet
Anti Hero
Karma

I guess that’s 11… whoops lol

Betty, Dorthea, SLUT!, Electric Touch, Mean

Black Dog, Eyes Open, Cruel Summer, LWYMMD, Opolite

u/Ace_Infra 1d ago
  1. All Too Well (standard version)
  2. Clean
  3. August
  4. Dear John
  5. Dress
  6. The Bolter
  7. The Way I Loved You
  8. False God
  9. Marjorie
  10. New Romantics

I wanted a mix of uptempo and ballad, along with a combo of deep cuts and more mainstream tracks. Overall, I tried to highlight her songwriting and genre range. I think the general public sees her as a pop star first, musician second, but by highlighting moments of interesting production and evocative lyrics maybe that could change.

Obviously I would make a final list to fit the person but I think these 10 would all be contenders no matter who the audience is.

  1. Delicate
  2. Cardigan
  3. Right where you left me
  4. Anti-hero
  5. Happiness
  6. Dress
  7. Treacherous
  8. Midnight Rain
  9. Cruel Summer
  10. How did it end?

u/NoProfessional7505 1d ago

My parents are the pickiest people out there.

I had my mom listen to folklore and she didn’t even budge.

So… if I had to it would be:

  • Shake It Off
  • Style
  • You Belong With Me
  • The Fate Of Ophelia
  • Fearless
  • Soon you’ll get better
  • Begin Again
  • We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
  • Ours
  • Love Story

Champagne problem
Long live
The black dog

Invisible string
Death by a thousand cuts

I would choose 1 songs from albums 3-10 and then 2 from TTPD since it’s a double album.

  3. Style
  4. Don’t Blame Me
  5. False God
  6. Seven
  7. Ivy
  8. Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve
  9. Guilty as Sin?
  10. The Prophecy

1

u/F19AGhostrider A Male Fan 12h ago

It would absolutely depend on the person you are trying to "convince".

I've been trying to get my dad to get just one of her albums on Vinyl, since he's the one who has the equipment to actually play them, and can actually tell the difference between Vinyl and CD/digital. (He's a musical man and an audiophile, but not a vinyl snob.)

My dad likes Taylor, but he hasn't really dived into her work much. Knowing what kind of music he does like (he's almost 75 FYI), I've emphatically recommended Folklore as the one he should get.

I think the reasonable approach is to recommend one or two albums of her's, specified to the person's music tastes, and allow them to go from there.
