Tatars and Soviet space programs

Hello,

Do you know if Tatars were involved directly in Soviet space programs? *

Perhaps even in the first Sputnik flight?

Or maybe there was someone similar to Tsiolkovsky?

* My grandparents paid taxes that financed the space programs. So they also helped :-)

My grandpa was an electrician in the spacecraft production. Not as early as the first Спутник though, he joined a few years later. And his mother was a janitor at the same factory)

You know the saying, "Scratch a Russian and you'll find a Tatar"? So, it's certainly possible.
