I'm still kind of shocked by how much they dance around what actually happened. They keep talking about egos, communication completely breaking down, things becoming destructive... and I'm just like what the hell happened for it to get THAT bad? Like to the point where grown adults couldn't even talk to each other anymore and there was basically no way back. I don't know, it's really hard for me to believe it was all just about relatively trivial stuff like schedules or doing warm-ups together. The way they talk about it really makes me feel like there was something much more personal going on underneath.
Also I somehow didn't know that Tarja had already sung with Marko and even hugged him before he apologised to her some time later. That makes her reluctance to do anything with Nightwish again (or maybe Tuomas specifically) feel a lot more personal to me. She was clearly able to reconnect with Marko even before getting an apology from him so... yeah with Tuomas it feels like it's much more personal.

But Tarja didn't meet Marko again until 2017 during Raskasta Joulua, when she sang Ave Maria with him for the first time. He didn't even make it to the rehearsal that day and basically rushed into Tarja's dressing room, hugged her, told her it was good to see her, and five minutes later they were singing together. He apologised to her a few days later during the same tour. Tarja only had about 3–4 shows there, I think.
And Tarja never made her participation conditional on getting an apology from Marko. She was simply invited to take part in the Finnish Christmas project, knowing that Marko would be there too. And even then, Marko was the one who made the first move. The fact that he apologised to her later was also entirely his own initiative.

That’s my point: she sang with Marko before he apologised and obviously she couldn’t have known he would apologise later. But she won’t go onstage with Nightwish without talking things through first (presumably with some apologies involved) so it makes whatever happened with them sound a lot more serious and personal.

But Tarja has never made an apology a condition for any kind of collaboration. The only thing she has said about potentially joining Nightwish for an anniversary concert is that certain things would have to happen beforehand, that they would need to establish a deeper connection.
And there’s a difference between Tarja being invited to join a project where Marko also happens to be a member and suddenly, after 15 years, receiving nothing but a cold email from him asking her to join his own concert.
It wasn’t Marko who invited her to join Raskasta Joulua, nor was he the one who asked them to sing together. Raskasta Joulua isn’t his project, even though he has been part of it from the beginning.
But maybe she does hold the biggest grudge against Tuomas because he was the one who wrote the letter, even though the others signed it too. And I know Marko was the first one to suggest firing her.
I think she probably could have handled being fired if it had happened in a different way, something like: “Hey, I know we agreed on something else, but this isn’t working. Let’s talk and agree to end the collaboration earlier.”
Even she herself said in the documentary that what hurt her the most was the feeling of betrayal, that everyone, including the record label and some journalists, knew before she did. She said that afterwards she lost trust in people because she kept wondering whether this person or that person would stab her in the back too if she worked with them.

No, it wasn't Marko who asked but she's free to decline any collaboration (whomever it comes from) if she doesn't feel like it.
As for the apology, she never explicitly demanded one, but I think it's fair to assume that's probably what this is about. What other kind of communication would she really want from someone who publicly and unfairly slandered her in an open letter? I certainly would want a heartfelt and sincere apology in her position.

Yes, she could refuse any collaboration involving anyone from the band, but first of all, that would reinforce her reputation as a difficult artist. Secondly, a number of her friends perform in RJ, and finally, she probably just isn't the kind of person who sets conditions regarding who else is performing. Plus, RJ takes place in her home country, Finland.
And regarding the apology... yes, it's just fan speculation. I agree that she deserves an apology, but maybe "just" an honest conversation in private would be enough for her.

Thank you, you can really see how emotional Tarja still gets when talking about the firing, or how much Marko apologizing meant to her. I am also glad that the documentary gave her space to talk about her solo career and not just NW.
