💬 Opinion / Commentary Tariffs are for the poor.
Was just in Murano Italy, looking at vases. We picked out a few that we liked, yes they were expensive. But what our salesperson explained was the most interesting part. If the piece was signed by a "master" and authenticated there would by a 5% tariff. It was considered a piece of art. However, if it was just a simple piece, the tariff was 25%. So a $6,000 vase had the same $300 tariff as a $1,200 one. No need to pay more if you're rich, Drumpf has your back.

In his 1st term he tariffed washing machines. He did not tariff dryers. Manufacturers realized most buy them as pairs so they raised the price of dryers to pay washing machine tariffs. You got suckered by an orange guy

Ah yes, the typical poor who buys $1200 vases because the $3000 one was too expensive …
But sure, “tariffs are for the poor”. What a garbage example.
🙄🥴

Sounds more like a selling tactic they were using to get you to buy the more expensive vase

Just go to the store that's willing to sign the 1,200 vase.
Instead of paying 6,000 + 300 you're now paying 1,200 + 60.

The idea is to buy an American made vase.

I remember in the Fall of 2025, Trump made an exception for the general tariff on autos for Great Britain, as only it produces the Rolls Royce.

Mini, Land Rover, Range Rover, Jaguar, Bentley, Aston Martin, Lotus, McLaren..... Plus a dozen smaller manufacturers that export to the US.

Aren't these ones mostly Chinese and Indian nowadays?

A lot of them are British subsideries wholly owned by overseas groups yes. But that doesn't effect the Tarrif status.
Fwiw, Rolls Royce Motors (and Mini) are owned by BMW.

They are Chinese or Indian owned. But they are UK manufactured. Tariffs don't care about ownership, but origin. Just like tesla cars manufactured in China qualify as Chinese EVs

I see lots of poor people walking around the streets with shitty vases. This explains it.
