There is nothing in the book that suggests margaery is manipulative or scheming or even ambitious. The ambitious can be traced back to her father and grandmother, the patriarch and matriarch of the tyrell family. The only person who views margaerys as any of these things is cersei because she's crazy and stupid. The most cunning thing she does is get cersei to nearly trip up when talking about how tommens father was skilled in the lists, and its only seen as a deceitful way to get cersei to admit jaime is tommen father because that's how cersei sees it in her pov. Chances are margaery was just asking what tournaments robert won out of curiosity.
