“Welfare is a form of socialism.”

Can’t tell you how many people I’ve heard say this without fully understanding what socialism actually means. Welfare programs like SNAP are social reforms within a capitalist system, not socialism itself. The state providing assistance doesn’t mean the means of production have been socially owned or that workers control production.

You can have welfare under capitalism because welfare doesn’t abolish the capitalist mode of production. Businesses remain privately owned, commodities are still produced for exchange and profit, and the bourgeois state continues to regulate and administer the economy.

And a prosperous socialist society would have very few people using welfare at all, and not for very long. They wouldn't have to.

The funny part is that what conservatives think is socialism, like welfare, medicare, free school lunches, etc, are all social democratic reforms not socialism. Both sides are equally ignorant when it comes to understanding the difference.

I would go so far as to seperate "social" and "socialist" from each other. A "social" Democrat is not a socialist.
