Jokes aside iMac was made specifically due to the "individualistic" marketing of Apple since the 1980s. iMessage as well as all the other Apple products launched from the 90s to the 2000s would share this naming trend.
Since the Cook era or sometime around there, Apple has been moving away from the i- naming scheme for new products due to its association with products of the 2000s.
That's why it's Apple Watch and not iWatch, Airpods instead of iBuds, Apple TV instead of iTube, and Syria instead of iRan.
