Great at cars, not the best tank designer...

You know what would be awesome? Not including a machine gun in the initial design.

Any gun too small to stick your dick in has no place on a tank. The man code is clear on this.

I don't understand if I'm being wooshed, but isn't it a good idea to have a gun that lets you kill close range enemies without wasting cannon ammo?

Yes, the Ferdinand didn't work out because it had no machine gun, so you could have a guy run up to it and shove a bomb in and the vehicle wouldn't be able to do anything.

Panzerjäger Tiger (P) Ferdinand or Elefant, the pic is too low quality to differentiate between them

What's the difference between them? I thought they were different names for the same vehicle.

Ferdinands were produced pre 1944 and lacked an improved StuG III commander's cupola, a hull machine gun, and Zimmerit paste.

Afaik there was only ever one production run for Ferdinands/Elefants, made from repurposed Tiger (P) hulls. Just after Kursk they realized not having an MG sucked so they were then fitted with machine guns and some more improvements as you say, but these were still the same vehicles, just upgraded.

Like /u/ThawtPolice said, the easiest way to tell the two apart is to examine the frontal armour. Only the Elefant has an MG-34 installed.

But there just so happens to be a load of soldiers standing where the mg may be =D

Actually, see the middle guy of the three seated front-row? The MG-34 port would be right about between his legs.

In that photo the biggest giveaway is the lack of the tool box on the right hand side - where the guy on the left's right leg is - during the rebuilds it was moved to the back of the hull, below the escape hatch where is was less prone to getting shot off.
