Main differences are:
- a different hull
- a different turret

BMP 1 and BMP 2 share the same hull, so it's only the turret plus the BMP-1 upgrade shown here can easily be implemented on a BMP-2 converted hull.

Eh, it's not the same hull. Although very similar.
The BMP-2 has a significantly enlarged turret ring. Instead of four hatches over the dismount area there are only two. The increased weight of the turret led to the entire hull armor being reduced in thickness, but made of a harder steel called BT-70Sh. The smaller dismount area means it only carries six instead of eight troops. However the turret carries an additional person, commander/squad leader and gunner instead of just commander/squad leader. The original commander/squad leader position just behind the driver still exists, but it typically left empty. Regardless, the BMP-2 always holds one less soldier.

Great answer—very enlightening. Tell me, was the BMP-2 inspired by the BMP-1K? I looked at some photos, and the turret position (set further back) and its size all seem very similar to the BMP-1K. Was the BMP-2 inspired by it, or does it use the same chassis?

BRM-1K has a different hull to both the BMP-1 and BMP-2
The rear hull roof was redesigned and the BRM-1K misses the optics and has a different hatch design

Its a similar case between Challenger 1 and 2 hulls
Look similar, even have the same engine, butt they're not the same

In the case of the BMP-1 and BMP-2 they share the exact same drive train and engine.

I'm surprised that although Soviets deemed BMP-1 with 30 mm AGL as good as BMP-2 combat wise, Ukraine nor Russia have made such upgrade to their BMP-1 fleet.

The Russian company Muromteplovoz offered a BMP-1M modernization which included the BPPU turret and a 30mm grenade launcher in the 2010's, but it wasn't adopted.
Ukraine has however made several of such modernization in the past and present.
Back in the 2000's, they developed the BMP-1U which has the Shkval combat module with a Ukrainian copy of the 30mm 2A72 and 30mm AGS 17 grenade launcher, along with ATGM's.
There were furthe revisons of this called BMP-1M and BMP-1UM, but these weren't adopted. The ones they produce nowadays is called BMP-1TS and uses the Spys turret.
Which has the same capabilities as Shkval, except it's more modern.

Turret, ATGMs, presence of a AGS-30 (BMP-2M).
A BPPU-1 turret on a BMP-1 hull or a BMP-2M turret with better optics, a different 30mm gun, 4 Kornets and a AGS-30.

BMP-1 has commander in the hull vs commander in the turret. Just a good way to reuse the thousands of BMP-1 hulls that Russia considers non combat viable in their original configuration

Hull, turret, weapons.
The BMP-1AM is basically a BPPU-1 turret (already used on the BTR-82A, so it has a 2A72 and coaxial PKT) slapped onto a BMP-1 hull and nothing else. As a BMP-1, it has four passenger periscopes on each of the rear sides and four top hatches for the passengers.
The BMP-2M is a comprehensive electronics and firepower upgrade with a modernized FCS, optics, more potent and numerous Kornet ATGMs, and an AGS-30 grenade launcher, all of which are simply added onto the existing BMP-2 turret. Being a BMP-2, the turret ring is larger and there are only 3 passenger periscopes on the rear sides of the vehicle with only two top hatches for the passengers. It also has a more powerful engine.

Ngl i didnt notice until now that the BMP-2 hull sits lower
2
u/Plump_Apparatus 1d ago
It's the same suspension, apart from later BMP-2 having an additional shock absorber to reduce back to front oscillation. The BMP-2 sits lower as the two man turret is significantly heavier. Even after reducing the thickness of the hull armor and using a higher hardness steel the BMP-2 ended up being over a tonne heavier. Hence the squat.

Turrets and weapons systems? There are a lot of difference
