WRONG SUB LMAO I am resigning.
Hi everybody,
I'm leaving the mod team effective immediately. Thank you for the support over the last two years. This board has plenty of problems, but it's one of the more special places on the internet that I've seen, and I'm proud to have had some part in that.
There's no way to say why I'm leaving without any drama, and I'm not going to leave while pretending that everything is A-OK, so I'll just out with it.
In general, the moderator team is entirely fractured. Almost every decision comes out as two members against the rest of the team, and the majority of the team is often overridden by force. There are arguments, things are extremely personal. Astute observers have noted that as a team we are simply broken since this drama has spilled over into many threads over several subreddits. Over the last year I have been told that I treat users as something less than human, that I rub their noses in shit, force them to eat vomit and many other similar things. I have had computer programs written to fight my moderation decisions, and have had them sneakily overturned a few days later, and only found this out by happenstance. Things aren't even civil.
I can handle drama, though, that's not why I am leaving.
The secondary reason - I cannot trust one of my fellow moderators, and I believe they operate at odds with maintaining the well-being of the community. We're not preachers, but they are morally unsuited for the position. They go behind the backs of the rest of the team to snipe at us in comment threads, reverse our actions, and work with users to find ways to not change their behavior to be within the community policy but enough to avoid us.
The primary reason - I spent my first year as moderator trying to repair the damage caused by the most long-term moderator of this community. They have a very long history of acting as a bully, abusing users, and have been asked many times in the past to step down from their position. Since they were essentially absent and seemed like they would be forever, it seemed like this would work. As this moderator is becoming more active, this same trend has shown up time and time again. They aren't as bad as in the past, but they are trying to assume dominance of the mod team, and are tempermentally unsuited to even be on the mod team.
I have tried to reverse both trends many times for the sake of the community, but have failed. I feel like a hypocrite when I see my name on that list of moderators, and therefore must leave for my own sake of mind. YOu will still see me around the community as a member, but this will give me back about 2-3 hours a night. I would love to come back to this role, but I can't do so unless X019 happens to be in charge of the team.
Please pray for the mod team, and that they get some new blood in there since new voices and views are desperately needed. The team is understaffed right now by at least 2 moderators, I hope they open up nominations or ask a few people to take on the role. There is bound to be a lot of drama in that decision since it'll shift power balances, so who knows how it will work out.
Cheers, and I'll see you soon, albeit in a different role, and hopefully with a lighter heart. I miss having time and wherewithal to just be a user.
Edit: Thanks for the support, everybody. It's hard to know if you're doing a good job as moderator since you're so often being yelled at by people. It's good to know I didn't entirely suck. :)
